Health Care Collaboration & Community in Virtual Worlds & Second Life
Second only to the general concept of Web 2.0, virtual worlds are the source of more articles in PubMed than any other emerging social technology. Of the many virtual worlds, Second Life (a free, open source 3d virtual world platform) is the one with the strongest presence in health care communities, from patient groups and medical education to research and professional meetings. Second Life can enable health systems to create either public or secure private spaces for functions from patient education, outreach, staff training, remote meetings, or more. As with any social technology, understanding the context and norms of the online space are essential to making institutional engagement a success. In this session, we will look at case studies illustrating how some organizations have used Second Life for communication, collaboration and community engagement.
The Use of the Social Web in Scholarly Communication

The benefits of Web 2.0 in a museum context are now being increasingly accepted, with papers at recent Museums and the Web conferences having highlighted a range of ways in which services such as Flickr and YouTube and technologies such as blogs and wikis can be used.
But what of the associated risks? What of the various concerns that the sector is beginning to address: concerns that the services may not be sustainable; institutional data may be locked into external services; services may infringe accessibility guidelines and associated legislation; users may lose interest in the services; inappropriate user-generated content may be published on the service; data created or stored on the services may not be preserved; etc.?
In a paper on "Web 2.0: How to Stop Thinking and Start Doing: Addressing Organisational Barriers" presented at Museums and the Web 2007 conference, the authors encouraged museums to take a leap of faith and begin experimentation with use of Web 2.0. But now that organisations have a clearer idea of the benefits which Web 2.0 can provide, it is appropriate to "stop doing and start thinking".
This paper describes a framework for supporting cultural heritage organisations in their use of Web 2.0 services, with examples of how this framework can be used in various contexts are provided.

Overall, Web 2.0 has the potential to greatly benefit users and organizations if adopted carefully and guided by its principles of openness, sharing and harnessing collective intelligence.
Web 2.0 refers to new ways of using the internet that focus on user-generated content, open sharing, and collaboration. Key aspects include blogs, wikis, social bookmarking, folksonomies, social media, and mashups. While offering opportunities, Web 2.0 also raises issues around ownership and control of user data, as well as sustainability of services. Archives can benefit by engaging with users in new ways and harnessing collective knowledge, while also managing risks.

Don't want the users to search for themselves (cf folksonomies) because they won't get it right.
