🚨 RED ALERT 🚨 The hydrogen sub-quota for industry 🏭 and transport 🚢 stemming from the Renewable Energy Directive ("RED III") have been the talk of the town in the hydrogen sector for quite a while. However, the directive leaves quite some #flexibilities and open choices to the Member States on how they wish to implement the targets. ✍🏼 The Belgian Hydrogen Council has therefore written a #positionpaper for all Belgian governments with recommendations and guidance on how to implement the hydrogen sub-targets in the best way in Belgium. The paper is structured in the following way: 📌 Introduction (Chapter 1) 📌 Analysis of relevant provisions in RED + importance for BE (Chapter 2) 📌 Calculation of the impact of the targets for Belgium (Chapter 3) 📌 Options for the implementation framework (Chapter 4) 📌 Recommendations by the Belgian Hydrogen Council (Chapter 5) You can download the paper on our website: https://ap.lc/rbxar WaterstofNet Cluster TWEED Port of Antwerp-Bruges Hydrogen Europe NLHydrogen France Hydrogène essenscia FEBEG VBO FEB Union Wallonne des Entreprises FOD Economie / SPF Economie / FPS Economy Vlaams Energie- en Klimaatagentschap Brussels Environment Wallonie - SPW Énergie Departement Economie, Wetenschap en Innovatie (EWI) VLAIO - Flanders Innovation & Entrepreneurship Tinne Van der Straeten Zuhal Demir Jo Brouns Philippe Henry Alain Maron Bart De Wever Matthias Diependaele Georges-Louis Bouchez Conner Rousseau Melissa Depraetere Alexander De Croo Petra De Sutter Sammy Mahdi Open Vld Groen cd&v N-VA Vooruit PvdA Vlaams Belang ECOLO Les Engagés - Mouvement Participatif Mouvement Réformateur (MR) PS belge

Joining Belgian forces on clean hydrogen to excel in Europe
About us
WaterstofNet and Tweed have both been coordinating their regional hydrogen clusters in Flanders and Wallonia respectively for several years and ointly established a national hydrogen council that aims to transcend the various political levels in our country. The BHC will take on important tasks such as the promotion of the Belgian hydrogen industry at home and abroad, as well as advise policymakers on the rollout of their regional and federal hydrogen strategies. The Council is neither a regional nor a federal initiative but it is a national council driven by the hydrogen industry. The 150 Belgian members of the Waterstof Industrie Cluster coordinated by WaterstofNet since 2015 and the 70 members of the H2Hub Wallonia coordinated by Cluster Tweed since 2020 are members of the Belgian Hydrogen Council. The Board of the Belgian Hydrogen Council is formed by eight companies, covering the hydrogen value chain. These companies were elected among all cluster members and will represent the Belgian Hydrogen Council for the coming two years: ENGIE (production), John Cockerill (technology), Fluxys (infrastructure), Port of Antwerp-Bruges (ports & import), ArcelorMittal (industry), INEOS (industry) Virya Energy (mobility) and Sirris (research).

Still reminiscing from an incredible four days of representing WaterstofNet and Belgian Hydrogen Council as part of the Belgian Economic mission to Norway, lead by HRH Princess Astrid and accompanied by excellencies like Jan Jambon and Tinne Van der Straeten and a business delegation of more than 400 companies 🇧🇪🇳🇴 On Monday I was invited by INEOS to visit their Rafnes site by boat. Despite the distance between the two locations, the synergies with INEOS BELGIUM and Project One in terms of inputs, outputs and investments are enormous with both plants counting largely on hydrogen to decarbonise 🏭 ⚡ 🎤 During the Energy Summit, in Oslo's most beautiful building that is the Opera House, we had the chance with the Belgian Hydrogen Council to showcase our unique selling points in hydrogen to the official Belgian delegation and Norwegian State Secretary for Energy Astrid Bergmål. First steps for intensive collaboration were taken with Miss Ingebjørg Telnes Wilhelmsen of the Norsk Hydrogenforum. Incredible to see how many new people you can meet in such a short time frame… 🎩 🎩 Hats of for an incredible organisation to Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT), Ministry of Foreign Affairs Belgium, Belgian Foreign Trade Agency (BFTA), Wallonia Export & Investment Agency and hub.brussels with a special thanks to Caroline Levrau, Liesbet Huyge and Maarten Lambert. Bravo! #BelgiumNorwaySummit #BEmissionNOR

This morning, our chairman Tom Hautekiet presented the Belgian hydrogen ecosystem to the Belgian Economic Mission to Norway lead by HRH Princes Astrid, Jan Jambon, Philippe Henry, Paul Van Tigchelt and Tinne Van der Straeten 🇧🇪🇳🇴 In the beautifull Opera House of Oslo and in the presence of a business delegation of more than 400 companies, the Belgian Hydrogen Council reached out to the Norsk Hydrogenforum for intensive collaboration, happily accepted by Miss Ingebjørg Telnes Wilhelmsen in her back to back presentation 🤝 Yesterday, we already had to chance to visit the INEOS site in Rafnes by boat to hear about their decarbonisation plans and the synergies the site has with INEOS BELGIUM and Project One. ⏫ Increasing numbers of industrial hydrogen users in Belgium “The petrochemical cluster in Antwerp already uses 400 kilotonnes of hydrogen a year. And new users are also emerging. The steel sector in Belgium, for instance, currently uses coke as a raw material to transform iron ore into liquid iron. But, in time, they want to modify their production process and replace coke with hydrogen. And, of course, we also need plenty of hydrogen for trucks and for the shipping industry.” Belgian Hydrogen Council Find out more: https://ow.ly/JnFI50S89gy
