On Wednesday 07/02, our colleague Federico Benito Donà (Magister Iuris - L.L.M. - MPA) and other knowledgeable panelists will be speaking at ERCST - European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition's round-table "European Hydrogen Bank: A Game Changer?" hosted at the Mission of Norway to the EU. The European Hydrogen Bank (EHB) is an essential instrument for the development of the #hydrogen economy in the EU. In its first official test, the operating rules have shown some shortcomings, which make difficult if not impossible for #steel producers to reap the benefits of the EHB. This is why the EHB rules should be revised before the next auction and not miss the link between hydrogen supply and industrial demand such as the steel industry. On the contrary, they should be aligned with the recently adopted gas and hydrogen EU legislation which calls for prioritising hydrogen use based on CO2 emissions abatement potential. #Hydrogen and its derivatives have a vital role to play in decarbonisation of the shipping sector. Hydrogen Council represented by Daria Nochevnik was pleased to join and present at the #COP28 High-Level Maritime Roundtable with International Maritime Organization and Clean Energy Ministerial, bringing together fuel suppliers, Port Authorities and the shipping industry. The know-how is there and the industry is advancing from vision to action, with demonstration projects across a suite of zero-emission vessel technologies. According to the Global Maritime Forum, 50 demonstration projects globally focus on hydrogen fuel cells and ammonia, 30 on methanol and 25 on hydrogen combustion. In March 2023, the first liquid hydrogen ferry, the MF Hydra, began operation in Norway. Mandates and legally binding targets remain critical to incentivise deployment at scale and accelerate the uptake of hydrogen and derivatives in the shipping sector. We look forward to advancing cooperation with the shipping industry and Port Authorities to build synergies between hydrogen trade corridors and shipping corridors worldwide. The main goals of the BHC were summarized during the presentation: - Profiling & promotion of the Belgian Hydrogen Industry - Acting as a spokesperson for Belgian hydrogen ecosystem equivalent to National H2 organisations in neighbouring countries - Advising our policy makers on roll-out of Regional & federal hydrogen strategies - Connecting existing industrial ecosystems on H2 in Flanders & Wallonia

While gas infrastructure took decades to be built, the European Commission expects 35 MtH2 yearly consumption as early as 2040. Key challenges include de-risking the market, access to finance, faster permitting processes, and common regulation.    🤔 Crucial dilemmas still lie ahead: 🔹 Integrated market or localised ad-hoc production? Do we need a trading market for hydrogen to ensure market liquidity and fair pricing? Where will future Hydrogen Valleys be located? Does it make more sense to produce hydrogen directly at sea or in industrial hubs? 🔹 Do we need a specific regulatory regime, or should we aim for a more flexible approach?
