In tune with the world

About us

Port of Antwerp-Bruges is a centuries-old double gateway to Europe and one of the biggest ports in the world. Follow us for the latest updates on how we’re working hard to become the port of the future, in tune with the world. We are the port authority. This means we play a key role in the port's day-to-day operations, to make it function and grow. We manage and maintain the docks, the bridges, the locks, the quay walls and the land. We’re also responsible for safe shipping traffic there. Apart from that, we provide tugs and cranes, carry out dredging work and promote the #PortofAntwerpBruges at home and abroad. We have a strong focus on the future, with sustainable development, transition and resilience as our top priorities.

Welcome, Eco Maestro! 🙌 The container ship of X-Press Feeders was recently in Antwerp for its maiden trip on the Green Baltic X-Press route. What makes the Eco Maestro special? The vessel sails on methanol! ♻️ As a multifuel port, we are happy to accomodate this type of vessels and congratulate X-Press Feeders for its exemplary forward-thinking entrepreneurship. Moreover, the dual-fuel vessel marks a concrete step in the partnership between X-Press Feeders and our port, nurturing eco-friendly shipping corridors and encouraging the use of alternative fuels. 🚢💚 More details on https://lnkd.in/g4GGAer7. #SustainableShipping #Multifuel #PortOfTheFuture

🚢 Life on board? Not without drinking water! 🌊 In Antwerp, inland skippers find fixed drinking water points at various locations within the port area. Drinking water not only quenches the thirst, but the ship’s crew also uses it for showers and household purposes! What happens if skippers are on a long journey with no drinking water points nearby? The drinking water boats from Groep De Wit offer a 'waterproof' solution! 💧 Did you know that a drinking water boat can transport more than 100 000 litres?! A taste for chocolate? 🍫 This World Chocolate Day, we’re highlighting the journey of the cocoa bean. Our port is the second largest cocoa port in Europe, but the story of the cocoa bean begins in the hot and humid climate of West Africa. 🌍 About 60% of all cocoa beans in our port come from cocoa plantations run by local farmers in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. The beans are sold through cooperatives. Before being shipped, the cocoa ends up in large warehouses, where it undergoes necessary inspection and packaging in bags. The cocoa bean requires humidity below 8%, so during their sea journey, they are kept in adapted containers. 🚢 In Belgium, the cocoa beans again make their way to various mega warehouses, such as in Antwerp! Here, they receive another packaging, thorough cleaning, and precise quality control. ✅ Their final destination? Local supermarkets, chocolate factories... and your backpack or pocket! Learn more about our role as a 'cocoa hub' in Europe at https://bit.ly/3VUYnpg. #WorldChocolateDay #Cocoa #CocoaJourney #ChocolateLovers

Heaving lines are often illegally weighted, which is a serious hazard to boatmen. In 2020, our colleagues André and Alain came up with the idea of sandbags as a safe alternative. We have been distributing these bags to ships mooring at our port ever since, hoping this idea would become more widespread. On this Day of the Seafarer 2024, we are sharing this again as a #SafetyTipsAtSea, hoping to inspire other ports to do the same. #DayOfTheSeafarer #DOTS International Maritime Organization

Today we welcomed transport experts from all 27 Member States as part of the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024. As a leading transport hub, we consider it crucial to exchange views with these experts, who play a crucial role in shaping the European Union's safe, secure, well-connected and sustainable transport framework. Our good connections to the European hinterland are some of our biggest strengths as a port. To optimise and green our connectivity, we invest in inland shipping, road transport, rail and pipeline connections. We also use state-of-the-art technologies, such as drones, to ensure all transport and other operations at the port can be carried out in a safe, sustainable, secure and efficient manner. Greening maritime transport is high on the EU’s agenda. And also on ours. That is why we are exchanging views with the experts on how to transform the port into a multifuel port, accommodating all alternative fuels for our shipping customers. Our fleet is another example of how we see the greening of maritime transport taking place: we already have a tug boat running on hydrogen and one on methanol. Moreover, we will soon add electric tugs to our fleet. This visit was a very interesting complement to another visit by energy experts last week, as we now had the opportunity to touch on two major regulatory fields: energy and transport. Not only is Port of Antwerp-Bruges part of an interconnected transport system, it is also an important hub in the EU’s energy network that extends far beyond the port’s borders into the deep hinterland of Europe serving industrial centres. As a port, we need a comprehensive European industrial policy that takes into account the transport, energy, circular and other dimensions to ensure the EU’s industry is ready to remain competitive and achieve the sustainable transition in Europe. As the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2024 draws to a close, we congratulate them for their achievements over the past six months and thank them for the invaluable opportunity they have given us to contribute to many rich discussions and visits with our expertise and insights. 🙏 #EU2024BE FOD Mobiliteit en Vervoer / SPF Mobilité et Transports Permanent Representation of Belgium to the European Union Lantis

Carbon Capture, Utilization and Storage (#CCUS) is crucial for decarbonising the Belgian economy. That’s why we signed the Oslo Declaration today. This declaration signifies the collective commitment to promote CCUS technologies, which are indispensable tools in our goal to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. There is no time to waste: we must act now to minimise our impact on the climate! To put our words into action, we are joining forces with Fluxys to develop a CO2 compression plant in Zeebrugge. Captured CO2 from (among others) Belgian and German industries will be transported via the C-grid pipeline network to this collection and compression plant. From Zeebrugge it can be further transported via an undersea pipeline for permanent storage in Norway's old oil and gas reservoirs. These initiatives show our commitment to advancing CCUS technologies and circular economy practices. We keep on seeking partnerships with CCU players who can work with us on convert carbon into valuable products, close the carbon cycle and contribute to a circular economy. #OsloDeclaration #Carbon #ClimateNeutral
