A Global Catalyst For Aquaculture And Alternative Seafood Innovation
About us
The idea for Hatch was conceived in late 2017 by co-founders Carsten Krome, Georg Baunach and Wayne Murphy. Our vision is to achieve the least-possible footprint of farmed and alternative seafood for the benefit of the oceans, terrestrial ecosystems and future generations. After 6 years in operation, Hatch has invested in more than 39 companies, run four (going on five) successful accelerator cohorts, raised a first US $8M fund and the second $70M Blue Revolution Fund as well as established offices in Hawaii, Norway and Singapore. The team has grown to +25 full-time members spread across the globe, who run the four business units – HATCH programs, HATCH Innovation Services, HATCH Blue Revolution Fund and The Fish Site.

🌊Oceans Month has concluded, but our commitment to preserving and prospering our oceans continues. We wrapped up OCEANOVATION with great success. Ava Van Vliet, our investment manager for the Blue Revolution Fund, shared insights on aquaculture investment trends in #VC, industry developments, emerging vertical interests, consumer trends, and the financial dynamics shaping the future of aquaculture. 👥Our Co-founder, Wayne Murphy, and Moritz Mueller, our managing director for The Fish Site, engaged with fellow enthusiasts and were delving into innovations in climate tech solutions, regenerative farming, new farming systems, and emerging trends in the sustainable blue food ecosystems. It was a fantastic event where we engaged with key stakeholders, change agents, individuals, investors, and companies dedicated to preserving and sustaining our oceans while supporting the blue economy sector. 🌍Blue food is a key sector of the #blue economy, and we believe aquaculture is a vital solution for bridging the #protein gap and feeding the world. Continuous investment, innovation, and #collaboration are essential. We must delve deeper into understanding the multitude of factors that impact our planet. This understanding is crucial as it allows our planet to continue providing essential #ecosystem services such as #food production, preservation of #biodiversity, and regulation of the #climate, among other vital functions. Thank you, OCEANOVATION, for organizing such a meaningful gathering and for bringing together innovative companies and ventures focused on sustainable aquaculture. We had a great time meeting in The Hague and joining some amazing aquaculture companies from Aqua-Spark’s global portfolio. 🌊At Hatch Blue, we believe in the importance of the collective effort to make a lasting impact on our #oceans, our planet, and our people. Georg Baunach, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Hatch Blue, discusses the importance of supporting and investing in regenerative farming and its positive impact on our food systems -🌿on the latest episode of the "Investing in Regenerative Agriculture and Food" podcast. Special thanks to Koen van Seijen for the insightful discussion. 🌐The conversation covers aquaculture's potential and challenges, with a specific focus on #regenerative practices and their pivotal role in enhancing global food security. We believe that regenerative aquaculture not only supports the sustainable production of nutritious food with a minimal #carbon footprint but also delivers significant environmental, economic, and social benefits to coastal communities.🌏 By farming species like seaweed 🌱 and bivalves 🦪, regenerative aquaculture fosters #biodiversity, improves water quality, and mitigates environmental impact, thereby indirectly supporting the preservation of wild fish stocks through ecosystem restoration and sustainable management. The discussion also covers the development of alternative proteins within aquaculture, emphasizing ongoing efforts to explore replacement and additional protein ingredients for aquaculture feed, aiming to conserve our natural resources. Examples include innovative approaches by startups striving to replace fish-derived omega-3s such as DHA and EPA with sustainable alternatives like fermented algae.🌊 While net pen aquaculture remains a significant part of global aquaculture production, Georg also mentioned where we see that land-based and offshore systems offer advantages in terms of environmental sustainability, water quality control, disease management, and long-term viability. These factors make them potentially better alternatives depending on - local conditions, species being cultivated, and regulatory frameworks in place. Considerations for investments in feed ingredients include evaluating cost structures, scalability, capital expenditure (capex), and ensuring a reliable supply, which is crucial for pursuing sustainable solutions. These factors underscore the sector's dynamic nature and the pivotal role of technology and #innovation in advancing #sustainable aquaculture practices. At Hatch Blue, our commitment is to continuously support climate-smart food systems through innovation, investment, and precision insights, which is central to our mission.
