The arrival of industrial scale aquaculture in places as ecologically important as Lake Victoria might not meet with universal approval. But Victory Farms – which has rapidly grown to become Africa’s biggest tilapia company – does appear to be generating significant benefits to both the local human population and the surrounding landscape. One of their most positive new initiatives involves producing tilapia eggs in partnership with local farmers, who can then use the water from these broodstock ponds to grow crops. In the process Victory’s system of “extensive aquaponics” is generating income, improving degraded farmland and helping to provide both fish and vegetables to an area where poverty and malnutrition are rife.
