We are proud to support women changemakers in the ocean space through our involvement in the Women in Ocean Food Innovation Studio! 🌟 This wonderful production highlights the significance of creating supportive spaces for women to harness their leadership skills. Excited to continue this impactful initiative with our partners at Hatch Blue in the years ahead. Together, let's empower women and drive positive change in ocean innovation!
In January of this year Hatch Blue in partnership with Conservation International delivered its first Women in Ocean Food Innovation Studio in Latin America (La Paz Baja California Sur Mexico). 12 companies and projects came together with an ambition to drive and scale their opportunity in the Blue Economy. The initial response to the call for applications clearly highlighted that supportive sector specific programs like this are needed and desired. It’s often hard to explain just what goes on in these programs and to share and highlight the kind of challenges and resilience of women all over the world experience and demonstrate in building a business in often very difficult cultural and socio-economic regions. We sought to capture the spirit determination and essence of the efforts of this amazing Latin American cohort. I hope this brief video gives you a taste of just how amazing these female entrepreneurs are and drives more support investment and attention to their entrepreneurial endeavors The program would not have been possible without all the amazing smart mentors that joined us in Baja or online Huge thanks to Gracie White and her ever present support with this project from the very start. To all the team at Innovaciones Alumbra and Cuna del Mar Alejandro Castillo López Donald Grant Robert Orr Dick Jones thanks for believing in this project along with Xiao R. Builders Initiative Erika Heine Montague, Ph.D. Schmidt Marine Technology Partners Mary Ann Beyster Desirée Pesci Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Laura Wood Jennifer Bushman Lukas Walton. And finally big thanks to #ChristyWalton for lending her support for the initiative and for sharing her blue journey with our demoday audience along with her ambition and thoughts about the future of blue food and specifically the important role of women in the years ahead

🌊 Check out this impactful video showcasing the incredible work of our investee company, Bureo Inc., in keeping discarded fishing nets out of the ocean! 🐟 They've teamed up with Patagonia in a powerful collaboration. Together, we can make a difference for our oceans and the environment! 🌊 #Sustainability #OceanConservation #BureoInc #Patagonia #EnvironmentalImpact
When Patagonia’s Tin Shed Ventures first invested in Bureo Inc in 2014, we had a hunch it was going to be big. Ten years later, the California startup has kept over 10 million pounds of discarded plastic fishing nets out of the ocean to be turned into recycled materials for clothing and gear. That’s the equivalent poundage of roughly 283 shipping containers or 2.5 million Chicago deep dish pizzas. Bureo got its start transforming fishing nets into material for skateboards and sunglasses. When we linked arms to help them scale, our product innovation team spent years of R&D with Bureo to develop NetPlus material, a recycled nylon worthy of high-quality products such as our Baggies and Down Sweaters, and recycled HDPE for hat brims. Our goal has always been to develop and strengthen waste-based supply chains so other brands can use them, too. As of 2024, more than 20 brands are using NetPlus. It’s powerful proof that product innovation paired with investment can move mountains (of fishing nets). To see how it all started, check out our short film below. https://lnkd.in/gNgVXmD9
