The document discusses three tips for optimizing website speed: 1) Using new image formats like WebP that are smaller in file size than JPEG and PNG, 2) Optimizing custom webfonts to reduce file size and number of HTTP requests, and 3) Implementing HTTP/2 to enable multiple requests over a single connection and reduce latency. Satisfying the Need for Speed (By Aleh Barysevich of SEO PowerSuite, SMX Lond...
Page Speed can make or break your business in 2018, as it is equally important for user experience, revenue, and SEO. Mobile page speed is becoming a Goolge ranking factor in July 2018, or is it already as of May 2018? To get an idea about the current state of the industry, SEO PowerSuite conducts an experiment for 1 mln pages to find the correlation between mobile page speed in the position in mobile SERPs. In this presentation, delivered by Aleh Barysevich at SMX London, you'll find the results of the experiment, as well as the latest tools and tips on improving page speed.
Rendering SEO (explained by Google's Martin Splitt)
This document discusses how search engines like Google render and digest web page content. It notes that Google places more importance on text appearing above the fold, without needing to scroll. The document also references Google patents from 2012-2018 that focus on page layout. It indicates that Google limits the CPU consumption used to render pages, and that the prominence and location of content within the rendered page layout is important. Finally, it poses the question of whether optimizing for rendering and search engine processing can help websites rank better in search results.
SearchLove London 2016 | Dom Woodman | How to Get Insight From Your Logs
In the SEO industry, we obsess on everything Google says, from John Mueller dropping a hint in a Webmaster Hangout, to the ranking data we spend £1000s to gather. Yet we ignore the data Google throws at us every day, the crawling data. For the longest time, site crawls, traffic data, and rankings have been the pillars of SEO data gathering. Log files should join them as something everyone is doing. We'll go through how to get everything set-up, look at some of the tools to make it easy and repeatable and go through the kinds of analysis you can do to get insights from the data.
In this presentation, I have shown how a webpage is loaded on your viewport after you request for the same. The process is simple. Once you click on the URL, the browser makes a request to the webserver. The request is processed by the webserver.
Web server files the response to the request and sends it to the browser. The requested page is sent to the web browser. The browser then loads and renders the page content. The requested page is then shown on the viewport.
Google Lighthouse is super valuable but it only checks one page at a time.
Hamlet will show you how to get it to check all pages of a site, and how to run automated Lighthouse checks on-demand at scheduled intervals and from automated tests.
He'll also cover how to set performance budgets, how to get alerts when budgets are exceeded, and how to aggregate page reports using BigQuery and Google Data Studio.

SMX Advanced 2018 SEO for Javascript Frameworks by Patrick Stox
The document discusses SEO considerations for JavaScript frameworks. It notes that SEOs need to understand how JavaScript works and how search engines handle it, as many developers are not familiar with SEO. It provides tips for SEOs, including that search engines don't interact with the page content in the same way users do, and content should be loaded by default without user interaction. It also discusses different approaches to rendering pages for search engines like server-side rendering versus client-side rendering.
The document discusses JavaScript and SEO. It begins with an introduction to Impression, a UK digital marketing agency. It then discusses Edd Wilson, a senior technical SEO specialist at Impression. The majority of the document discusses the impact of JavaScript on SEO and search engine indexing. It notes that JavaScript can affect rendering and loading performance, and outlines optimizations that can be made to JavaScript to improve SEO, such as deferring non-critical JavaScript, chunking files, and compressing assets.
SearchLeeds 2018 - Bastian Grimm - Peak Ace - International site speed: Going...
Especially in a mobile-first world, fast loading websites are of utmost importance. Also, Google has been very vocal about anything web performance in the last few years and is pushing hard to innovate repeatedly. But performance is so much more! User satisfaction should be the main goal because expectations are clear: You’ve got two to three seconds maximum to deliver, so make it count. During Bastian's SearchLeeds 2018 talk he walked through various advanced topics around web performance optimisation going way beyond Accelerated Mobile Pages (and other short-term solutions) to make any website really, really fast.
This deck is from #LAC2016 where I stepped in last minute to do a session on optimising AJAX for organic search pitched at beginner level with expectation some intermediate level. Well received by audience it seemed as no one walked out after the TL;DR ;-)
This document summarizes a presentation about using Chrome DevTools to test and optimize websites for Google's upcoming Page Experience update. It discusses the components of the update like mobile-friendliness and core web vitals. It provides guidance on using DevTools to test for issues in areas like intrusive interstitials, HTTPS security, and core web vitals metrics. The presentation emphasizes that field data may differ from lab tests in DevTools, and it outlines many resources for further information on the Page Experience update and related topics.

Stapling and patching the web of now - ForwardJS3, San Francisco
This document summarizes a talk given by Chris Heilmann at ForwardJS in 2015. Heilmann discusses the state of web development technologies and how developers have focused too much on experimental features that are not ready for production use. This has led to a fragmented web where browsers implement features differently. He argues developers should focus on standardizing and improving existing web standards rather than constantly introducing new technologies. ES6 is highlighted as a priority for improving existing JavaScript.
Demystifying Mobile SEO - 2014 Search Engine Strategies Atlanta Session

The need for Speed: Advanced #webperf - SEOday 2018Bastian Grimm
The document discusses optimizing web performance. It begins by defining critical rendering path optimization, which involves identifying the minimum CSS needed to render the initial viewport of a page. This critical CSS can be inlined into the page head to avoid an additional HTTP request. Non-critical CSS is then preloaded asynchronously so it downloads in parallel without blocking page rendering. Tracking paint metrics like first contentful paint and time to interactive is also recommended to measure performance improvements. Overall, the document emphasizes optimizing the critical resources needed for the initial page load.

Quality Patents: Patents That Stand the Test of TimeAurora Consulting
Is your patent a vanity piece of paper for your office wall? Or is it a reliable, defendable, assertable, property right? The difference is often quality.
Is your patent simply a transactional cost and a large pile of legal bills for your startup? Or is it a leverageable asset worthy of attracting precious investment dollars, worth its cost in multiples of valuation? The difference is often quality.
Is your patent application only good enough to get through the examination process? Or has it been crafted to stand the tests of time and varied audiences if you later need to assert that document against an infringer, find yourself litigating with it in an Article 3 Court at the hands of a judge and jury, God forbid, end up having to defend its validity at the PTAB, or even needing to use it to block pirated imports at the International Trade Commission? The difference is often quality.
Quality will be our focus for a good chunk of the remainder of this season. What goes into a quality patent, and where possible, how do you get it without breaking the bank?
** Episode Overview **
In this first episode of our quality series, Kristen Hansen and the panel discuss:
⦿ What do we mean when we say patent quality?
⦿ Why is patent quality important?
⦿ How to balance quality and budget
⦿ The importance of searching, continuations, and draftsperson domain expertise
⦿ Very practical tips, tricks, examples, and Kristen’s Musts for drafting quality applications

Fluttercon 2024: Showing that you care about security - OpenSSF Scorecards fo...Chris Swan
Have you noticed the OpenSSF Scorecard badges on the official Dart and Flutter repos? It's Google's way of showing that they care about security. Practices such as pinning dependencies, branch protection, required reviews, continuous integration tests etc. are measured to provide a score and accompanying badge.
You can do the same for your projects, and this presentation will show you how, with an emphasis on the unique challenges that come up when working with Dart and Flutter.
The session will provide a walkthrough of the steps involved in securing a first repository, and then what it takes to repeat that process across an organization with multiple repos. It will also look at the ongoing maintenance involved once scorecards have been implemented, and how aspects of that maintenance can be better automated to minimize toil.
Mitigating the Impact of State Management in Cloud Stream Processing SystemsScyllaDB
Stream processing is a crucial component of modern data infrastructure, but constructing an efficient and scalable stream processing system can be challenging. Decoupling compute and storage architecture has emerged as an effective solution to these challenges, but it can introduce high latency issues, especially when dealing with complex continuous queries that necessitate managing extra-large internal states.
In this talk, we focus on addressing the high latency issues associated with S3 storage in stream processing systems that employ a decoupled compute and storage architecture. We delve into the root causes of latency in this context and explore various techniques to minimize the impact of S3 latency on stream processing performance. Our proposed approach is to implement a tiered storage mechanism that leverages a blend of high-performance and low-cost storage tiers to reduce data movement between the compute and storage layers while maintaining efficient processing.
Throughout the talk, we will present experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in mitigating the impact of S3 latency on stream processing. By the end of the talk, attendees will have gained insights into how to optimize their stream processing systems for reduced latency and improved cost-efficiency.

Mobile first indexing challenges #1
Source: Gary Illyes @ SMX Advanced Seattle 2017
Google never had to swap over an
entire index to something new, this is
completely new and doing that without
experimentation is not possible. And sites
should not be hurt, therefore large scale
indexing experiments will be conducted.”

Figuring out for 18-year-old desktop
signals: How can this be used for the
mobile web? E.g. the link graph/PR is
different and totally messed up; how can
Google make this work?”
5. 5 @peakaceag pa.ag
Mobile first indexing is about Google preferring and organising cross-device
content in a way that it can be easily queried from and displayed on a lot of
different devices.
CrawlingIndexing RankingMobile
What is mobile first indexing anyways?
6. 6 @peakaceag pa.ag
Mobile is dominating – 60 % of searches are non-desktop
Mobile search usage surpassed desktop in 2015 already; Hitwise reported in 08/2016
that nearly 60 percent of searches now happen on mobile devices.

Google announced mobile first indexing in 11/2016
It feels like even Google doesn’t know how and when some things will work.

What about desktop-only sites?
How to deal with common mobile site patterns such as tab switches, carousels, etc.?
Source: SMX Advanced 2017, Seattle
For desktop-only sites, indexing stays the same,
however crawling will be done using a mobile UA:
“We will index mobile content, only if you don’t have
anything we will index desktop content – no one will
fall out!”.
Can I use accordion tabs, hidden tabs, etc. on my
mobile site?
Google is going to assign them the same value as
non-hidden content. Illyes said, Google is going to
ensure, that “hidden content is not valued less on a
mobile site”.

Site- & content-parity is absolutely crucial!
Make sure desktop & mobile are in sync; content, annotations, etc.
Source: SMX Advanced 2017, Seattle
What if the mobile site has less content compared
to the desktop site?
Ranking will be based on “shorter“ content! (Basically,
you need to ensure that whatever you want to rank for
will be present on mobile).
Mobile ranking factors
(including mobile friendliness testing) will generally
remain unchanged.
16. 16 @peakaceag pa.ag
Early on we saw crazy stuff! 4,500 visibility on desktop!
Mobile subdomain started to rank for desktop queries… real-world testing with live sites!
17. 17 @peakaceag pa.ag
Some stuff is entirely useless…
F.e. desktop site-links pointing to mobile; great use case! (only after MFI announcement)

I don’t believe we will be giving you
any type of notification once you have
been switched to mobile first indexing.

25. With rendering there is no one-size-fits-all solution…
Rendering: which resolution?
26. 26 @peakaceag pa.ag
1024 x 768 only!
Why is that important now? Watch your responsive breakpoints, portrait vs. landscape,
etc. – basically everything that’s important to you needs to be rendered properly!

33. Also from an SEO standpoint, this has various advantages:
Proper Responsive
34. 34 @peakaceag pa.ag
What does proper responsive mean? #1
<picture>
▪ First and foremost: Different ways of showing
content per resolution (device). Design the
smallest viewport first, then work your way up.
Also, consider landscape vs portrait.
▪ Images: Best possible size, resolution & format. The
new <picture> element is a perfect starting point,
but there are lots more solutions. Also, consider fluid
images (they adapt to the container they are in).
35. 35 @peakaceag pa.ag
What does proper responsive mean? #2
▪ Critical rendering path optimisation: Optimise
for time to first meaningful paint. Reduce round
trips; off-load JS and inline CSS – for each
resolution/breakpoint.
▪ Conditional loading of components: Only
request what's needed when visible. Combine with
pre-fetching and pre-rendering (only with high
resolutions).

▪ Optimise paint and re-paint, especially for small
resolutions/breakpoints. CSS media queries can
help a lot.
▪ Keep your DOM clean (hiding elements is only half
the truth).
37. Fast loading time plays an important role in overall user experience!
Performance = user experience!
38. 38 @peakaceag pa.ag
Revisited: PageSpeed (load time) is a ranking factor
Surprise, surprise; now also on mobile!

40. 40 @peakaceag pa.ag
Please don’t forget your desktop now; both are relevant!
Especially for responsive sites this can be a massive challenge!
Source: https://pa.ag/2FGGKAi
With the mobile first index, will desktop
rankings use mobile page speed instead of
desktop page speed?
No […] as mentioned […], while our index will be
built from mobile documents, we’re going to
continue to build a great search experience for
all users, whether they come from mobile or
desktop devices.
41. 41 @peakaceag pa.ag
Make sure to get the basics right!
All slides on SlideShare: http://pa.ag/iss17speed
Use my checklist on SlideShare to double check:
▪ Optimize images: reduce overhead for JPGs & PNGs (metadata,
etc.), request proper sized images and try new formats.
▪ Implement effective caching and compression.
▪ Whenever possible, use asynchronous requests.
▪ Decrease size of CSS and JavaScript files (minify).
▪ Use a content distribution network (CDN) / an asset server
(as well as cookie-less domains) to optimize parallel requests.
▪ Lean mark-up (no comments, use inline CSS / JS only where
necessary or useful)
▪ Consider (DNS) pre-fetching & pre-rendering if feasible.
▪ Watch (& optimize) for TTFB, don’t forget you back-end
architecture / systems (e.g. DB, webserver etc.).
