This document discusses using semantic web technologies to improve interoperability in the design and construction industry. It describes work done by researchers at Ghent University to develop parallel semantic descriptions of building information models. This includes developing an IFC/RDF graph to convert IFC files to semantic web format and an Architectural Information Modeling (AIM) graph to provide a schema for architectural design data. It also discusses using these semantic descriptions to build applications for querying building information and checking building performance through reasoning. The document concludes that relying on semantic web descriptions can help address interoperability challenges in construction by allowing parallel linked data views of building information.
