Introducing Tanzu Editions
VMware Tanzu editions package capabilities of the Tanzu portfolio into clearly defined solutions targeted at the most common enterprise challenges. There are four Tanzu editions, each a superset of the one before it along a spectrum, giving customers a clear path to add capabilities over time as needed.
VMware introduced their Tanzu portfolio for building, running, and managing modern applications on Kubernetes. The presentation included an overview of Tanzu and its components, including how vSphere 7 integrates Kubernetes and Tanzu Kubernetes Grid for deploying and managing Kubernetes clusters. It also described Tanzu Mission Control for centralized management of multiple Kubernetes clusters across different platforms and clouds through consistent policies, visibility, and control.
This document summarizes Cheryl Hung's presentation on cloud native computing. The presentation covered the Kubernetes community and role of the CNCF in growing it, current architectural trends like serverless computing and service meshes, and new norms for companies engaging in open source like individual contributions over company reputation. It encourages companies to establish open source program offices to guide compliance, outreach and executive support for open source contributions.

Modern App Architecture - Microservices, API FriendlyDevOps Indonesia
This document summarizes a presentation given at DevOpsDays Jakarta 2020 about modern application architecture and microservices. It discusses how application landscapes are transforming to use more cloud, DevOps practices, and container-based workloads. It also covers challenges around security with modern applications and microservices. Specific topics discussed include API security, attacks on applications and infrastructure, and the F5 application security framework. The presentation advocates for an API gateway and management to help secure microservices applications and provides examples of benefits. It also discusses site reliability engineering practices, automation approaches like the application factory, and integrating security into the software development lifecycle.
How do we add some sanity to the process of constructing microservices and provide guidelines and design heuristics on restructuring microservices. In this talk we will look at life after running microservices architectures in production and learn from the mistakes committed over the past five years. We will analyze real life systems on the criteria for consolidating microservices into monoliths or moduliths based on technical and business heuristics as illustrated In [4]. The techniques - a combination of mapping microservices to core technical attributes [2] reduced by affinity mapping and business domain context distillation [3] - have emerged from working with a number of customers where the value of microservices has not been realized despite leveraging Domain Driven Design.

The document discusses how the way we work is changing dramatically and Windows remains central to getting work done. It summarizes that the total cost of owning PCs is about 80% support and management costs, not the initial purchase price. Modern PC management with solutions like Workspace ONE from VMware can cut costs by 62% compared to traditional management by providing capabilities like over-the-air updates and security across any network. Workspace ONE provides flexible options to transition organizations to modern management. The document also demonstrates capabilities like zero-touch device onboarding, firmware management through Dell solutions, and security insights and automation through Workspace ONE Intelligence.

Managing User Experience During Cloud MigrationseG Innovations
Competition in the digital services world is about managing the customer experience. The cloud is an operating model, and migrating workloads to the cloud involves much more than ‘lift & shift’. In fact, the heavy lifting of cloud migrations may be much more about people than technologies.
Managing customer expectations requires that the user experience be at least as good—if not better—after a cloud migration than it was before the migration took place. Customers really don’t care about the ‘cloud’ per se, they care about the outcomes that cloud-based services can provide.
Learn how you can manage customer expectations and leverage services-oriented monitoring as a program of work within a cloud migration.

Software development... for all? (keynote at ICSOFT'2024)miso_uam
Our world runs on software. It governs all major aspects of our life. It is an enabler for research and innovation, and is critical for business competitivity. Traditional software engineering techniques have achieved high effectiveness, but still may fall short on delivering software at the accelerated pace and with the increasing quality that future scenarios will require.
To attack this issue, some software paradigms raise the automation of software development via higher levels of abstraction through domain-specific languages (e.g., in model-driven engineering) and empowering non-professional developers with the possibility to build their own software (e.g., in low-code development approaches). In a software-demanding world, this is an attractive possibility, and perhaps -- paraphrasing Andy Warhol -- "in the future, everyone will be a developer for 15 minutes". However, to make this possible, methods are required to tweak languages to their context of use (crucial given the diversity of backgrounds and purposes), and the assistance to developers throughout the development process (especially critical for non-professionals).
In this keynote talk at ICSOFT'2024 I presented enabling techniques for this vision, supporting the creation of families of domain-specific languages, their adaptation to the usage context; and the augmentation of low-code environments with assistants and recommender systems to guide developers (professional or not) in the development process.

Editor's Notes
Gartner predicts that by 2020, 75 percent of application purchases supporting digital business will be "build," not "buy."
Gartner's research shows that many organizations already favor a new kind of "build" that does not include out-of-the-box solutions, but instead is a combination of application components that are differentiated, innovative and not standard software or software with professional services (for customization and integration requirements), or solutions that are increasingly sourced from startups, disrupters or specialized local providers.
Build, not buy

Matt Russell will discuss the Pivotal methodology in an earlier section. Accenture Worked with Pivotal to create offerings; some (like Labs and AppTX) are extensions of Pivotal’s offerings while others (Accelerated Delivery) are unique to Accenture. Our Accenture associates are trained Labs and AppTX engagements in the same way that Pivotal would.
Labs:
Enabling clients 1:1 to build software via XP, Lean Product Management, and User Centered Design
AppTX
Application Transformation Planning: Our teams will create a program prioritization, and application roadmap
Application Transformation Execution: Our teams will execute a tracer bullet, and enable the scaling of delivery efforts
Accelerated Delivery (XP at Scale):
Accelerating the delivery of working software that drives business and user value via XP, Lean Product Management, and User Centered Design
THIS IS NOT A PIVOTAL OFFERING, THIS OFFERING IS UNIQUE TO ACCENTURE
Enablement focused on learning modern practices like:
Agile Academics
Cloud Native Development
DevOps
Extreme Programming
Lean Product Development
Test Automation
User Centered Design
An example of extreme team agility: how we quickly adjusted and mobilized remote delivery team.
In the wake of Covid-19, the team was asked to support delivery by working remote. Remote doesn’t sound challenging, but Remote Pair Programming was a new experience for all of us.
We quickly came up with a game plan, and worked closely with our client to provide all the necessary infrastructure, (VPN, CPU’s) and computing equipments (e.g. additional keyboards, monitors) to support pair programming. It was a almost seamless transition and team was up within a day (including setting up system with required software) and started delivering from day 2.
Specific Technologies used:
Virtual pair programming - To avoid the impact on pair programming model, we identified Microsoft Team Virtual Pairing rooms and later transition to Cisco meeting for each pairs so that we can still match pair model. We leverage video conferencing to run standup meetings.
Online collaboration/whiteboarding tools – Missing whiteboards could have been a challenge with team size of 40+ (including Devs, PA’s, PO’s and TL’s), but thanks to online collaboration tools like Miro. We started heavily using Miro for our meetings and all attendees started contributing on miro. We realized it was more effective than physical meetings and many of them brought in new ideas.
Virtual Coffee Breaks & Online Game – To compensate for the lack of physical / social interactions we used to enjoy in a physical office environment and to keep the team motivated, we started having virtual coffee breaks every week and biweekly online games where strictly we discuss something apart from work. These has helped team to stay motivated.
Throughput unaffected.
