About us

Suicide is a complex problem that disproportionately impacts the military community. Stop Soldier Suicide is the only national nonprofit focused solely on solving the issue of suicide among U.S. veterans and service members. Our team is laser-focused on research and care that is specific to reducing veteran and service member suicide. Our vision is a nation where veterans and service members have no greater risk for suicide than any other American. We have an aggressive goal to reduce the military suicide rate by 40% no later than 2030.

Thank you to the The American Association of Suicidology for including Stop Soldier Suicide in the speaker lineup for its 57th Annual Conference in Las Vegas. We were grateful for the opportunity to present in May about Black Box Project as well as suicide risk communication and intervention preferences for veterans and service members. Similar to the black box used to determine the cause of a plane crash, Black Box Project is Stop Soldier Suicide’s forensic data analysis project that leverages artificial intelligence to identify and analyze clinically meaningful data from digital devices of veterans who died by suicide. Our digital forensics experts and data science partners are working to develop machine learning models that can identify never-before-known suicide risk patterns. In an effort to honor his brother Mike, a Navy veteran who died by suicide on Memorial Day in 2017, Chris Stephens started his own fundraiser, Miles for Mike. For the last seven years, Chris (a marketing coordinator at Stop Soldier Suicide) has been running "meaningful miles" in the mountains, on hiking trails, and at marathons and 5Ks to raise funds for Stop Soldier Suicide. Recently, Chris's efforts were recognized by News Channel 9 in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and he accepted a $500 donation from Channel 9 and McMahan Law Firm. Watch the coverage here: https://lnkd.in/gRR6k9nF The Stop Soldier Suicide team is so proud to be a part of Chris's journey and to help honor Mike's memory in the work we do. #MHAM #MHAM2024 #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth

We are deeply grateful to the @Lundbeck US Charitable Fund for its $1.1 million donation to Stop Soldier Suicide. Their incredible contribution will help us scale our suicide-specific support and deliver thousands of hours of evidence-based services for some of the most at-risk U.S. veterans and service members. This Mental Health Awareness Month, we applaud the more than 400 corporate partners who are helping us provide free mental health and wellness care for veterans and service members. Lundbeck US Charitable Fund announced this funding in November 2023, and we are receiving funds throughout the course of 2024-2026. Learn more about their contribution: https://lnkd.in/g4xeYUsz

In the ceremony of Memorial Day – parades and wreaths and barbecues and flags – the focus is often on “the heroes of battle,” making it easy to gloss over those whom we’ve also lost to suicide. But, the reality is that we lose far more U.S. service members and veterans to suicide than we do to enemies foreign or domestic. Suicide doesn’t change their service to our country. This weekend, we honor those who gave their lives to the cause of freedom and the security of our nation–both in the course of battle and in bearing the burden of their service. On this National Mental Health Provider Appreciation Day, we are honored to be able to recognize our outstanding team of Wellness Coordinators who work to support more than a thousand veterans and service members across the nation each year. They serve beyond themselves to offer hope and healing to our clients who are most in need, which deserves more than just a simple day or thank you. We hope they feel valued and know the importance of their work today and every day.
