In the ceremony of Memorial Day – parades and wreaths and barbecues and flags – the focus is often on “the heroes of battle,” making it easy to gloss over those whom we’ve also lost to suicide. But, the reality is that we lose far more U.S. service members and veterans to suicide than we do to enemies foreign or domestic.
Suicide doesn’t change their service to our country. This weekend, we honor those who gave their lives to the cause of freedom and the security of our nation–both in the course of battle and in bearing the burden of their service.

Today, we come together to honor the brave Americans who were prisoners of war and those who remain missing in action. These individuals have left an indelible mark on our nation's history, embodying the spirit of sacrifice and resilience that defines our country.
As we raise the POW/MIA flag, let us also raise awareness about the ongoing efforts to account for those who are still missing. Their sacrifice is a reminder of the price of freedom and the duty we have to never forget.

What was the #1 important factor in Higgins' rise from poverty to celebrity? The vessels are being burned. This metaphor advocates creating a point of no return and putting all of your effort into Plan A, based on a narrative in which a military general urges his troops to destroy their own boats in order to eliminate retreat as an option.

Two rogue states - a big empire and its friend - engaged in genocide together.
Two governments openly saying there's no power above them.
Yesterday, with one's bombs and one's military, they were burning families alive in Rafah.
As the haunting images and sounds were reappearing on our screens today, there's so much to be said. And to grieve. And so much rage.
This is what I've tried to do with all of it:
Here's an episode I recorded today on Israel's massacre in Rafah, the concept of a rogue state, and why it might matter.

In a RIGGED game on a RIGGED planet we still won 96% to 4% in favor of LOVE!
Jazz for Peace: representing 96% of Israeli's & Palestinians & 100% of the World! Let's now implement the most popular and IMPORTANT Peace Proposal EVER! How did we do it? "Its the MUSIC stupid!" “Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced,” ~ JAMES BALDWIN See Rick’s appearance on The Queen Mimi Podcast with performances at minute 36.30 and 51.30 https://lnkd.in/eNr2NiFe The next step in a humane and just world is to properly implement the vote of the Israeli people who have united not only with the Palestinian people but with the other 96% of our world AGAINST both ANY part of HAMAS that wants to destroy western civilization as well as the "Final Solution" minority of Zionists. In other words - the people who want to destroy western civilization and the people who want to implement a "final solution eradication" of all Palestinian people (including members of the Israeli/Palestinian/USA Jazz Band that we assembled to perform at the United Nations back in 2002 www.jazzforpeace.org/un ) are on ONE SIDE making up 4% at the absolute MOST, while the VAST majority of Israeli's, Palestinian, Americans, and the rest of the world, making up AT LEAST 96% but probably MUCH, MUCH higher - are on the other side.
Son of two holocaust survivors, professor specialized in the Holocaust and the Israeli–Palestinian conflict speaks to students in NYC: “Israeli Defense Forces It is a genocidal army. Why are you allowed to have public support, at this moment, for a genocidal state and a genocidal army? .. Look content is 10,000 times more offensive and outrageous, to any so to speak, civilized mind and civilized heart then the “From the river to the sea” slogan. The only reason there is an argument about that slogan is because we have legitimized this notion that hurt feelings are grounds for stifling speech. And that, to me, is totally unacceptable.” - Norman Finkelstein https://lnkd.in/dZUCVJVS
September is NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION AWARENESS MONTH.
It pains me that I have personally known 22 people that have made this choice over the last 30-35 years, with the most recent being in the last couple of years.
Unfortunately, this disproportionally affects our US Veterans and Servicemembers. According to the most recent reporting, we are making progress. There were 343 FEWER veteran suicides in 2020 compared to 2019. However, veteran suicide is still almost DOUBLE the rate for non-veteran US adults (31.7 vs. 16.1 for every 100,000), and while it has dropped from the well-known '22 veteran suicides per day' level ... it is still 16.8 veteran suicides per day, and that's just too many to continue turn a blind eye.
This is one of the most important issues that OUR government needs to focus on in support of the men and women who have served in the US Armed Forces in ANY capacity. We can and we MUST treat these soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines much better in return for their commitment and sacrifice.
Congress must do better.
The Pentagon must do better.
Leadership must do better.
But the real answers and solutions are much closer to those experiencing these mental health crises. There are people all around that can help, that are willing to help, that WANT to help ... just reach out and start talking to someone ... no one can go it alone!
As family, friends and loved ones ... we have to recognize the signs, listen to the person and hear the pain of their experience before we can understand how to best help. The next minute matters ... the next hour matters ... our words and actions matter ... tomorrow matters ... YOU ALL MATTER!

Suicide is a problem that touches the lives of many Americans. Many of us may know someone, such as a friend, family member, or coworker who has attempted or died by suicide. It’s important to know that suicide is preventable and with commitment and engagement in our communities, workplaces, and homes, together we can help reduce that number.

Navigating the complexities of being both Indigenous and a veteran requires a nuanced understanding and appreciation of the dual identity, as well as targeted support to address their specific needs.
Indigenous peoples in the United States have experienced centuries of colonization, forced removal from their lands, and attempts at cultural eradication. Serving in the military of a nation that has historically oppressed one's own people can create a profound internal conflict.
It is important for oral health providers to understand the intersected identity of Indigenous veterans so that they can provide the most comprehensive care to their patients.
Join us and a panel of experts tomorrow at 1pm CT to explore these complexities and the health disparities they face. Register here: https://buff.ly/3SAzvTI.
