Recently, GKN Aerospace’s US Global Technology Centre in #FortWorth, TX hosted a distinguished community of Additive Manufacturing (AM) experts from across Defence and Space Primes, academia, the US Air Force and US Navy. This event also marked a significant milestone with the achievement of full operational capability of our Cell 3, recognised as one of the world's largest laser directed energy deposition AM cells. GKN Aerospace’s Cell 3 features include: -20KW laser -Up to 10-axes of motion -Large area inert environment -5.6m (18.3 ft) x 2.5m (8.2 ft) max substrate size -Two-sided or rotary deposition These expanded capabilities will become key enablers to advancing the adoption of large scale AM into critical aerospace & defence applications; substantially reducing lead times and increasing resiliency in the supply base. We were honoured to have Dr. Mark Benedict, Senior Scientist for Convergent Manufacturing, as our Keynote speaker for the event. Dr. Benedict previously led the Air Force Research Laboratory’s, Materials and Manufacturing Directorate and was chief technical adviser at America Makes. Hosting Dr. Benedict and his industry peers provided a valuable forum to accelerate technology development via collaboration among industry leaders. 'GKN Aerospace has a responsibility to the international industrial base to address challenges in the Aerospace supply chain and enable accelerated fielding of critical mission capabilities within Defence,' said Dr. David Bond – GKN Aerospace’s SVP Engineering & Technology for Defence. 'Rapid industrialisation of AM is a top priority for our business.'
