About us

Climate change and its consequences are one of the greatest challenges ever to face mankind. The global challenge around decarbonisation is huge. At Rolls-Royce SMR, our vision is simple – we want to provide clean, affordable energy for all. A new approach to delivering nuclear power Our Small Modular Reactor is an integrated power station, that takes well understood, existing nuclear technology and applies a factory-based philosophy to its fabrication and assembly. This repeatable, standardised approach generates huge efficiency gains to make it a commoditised product that is affordable, repeatable, deliverable and investable on a global scale, providing cheaper and more flexible electricity to form part of a future balanced, clean energy mix. When fully operational the Rolls-Royce SMR programme will create 40,000 regional UK jobs by 2050 and generate £54bn in economic benefit, with a forecast to target £250bn in global exports for the UK. As Rolls-Royce SMR prepares to enter step 3 of the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) by the UK nuclear industry’s independent regulators, it is simultaneously running a robust auditing programme to solidify quality in standards and operations.  Following a series of independent audits, Rolls-Royce SMR has achieved ISO 14001 & ISO 45001 certification. These certifications demonstrate rigorous and robust arrangements are in place for regulatory compliance and effective risk management for health, safety and the environment.    In today’s globalised economy, businesses are increasingly held accountable for their environmental impact and the safety and health of their workers.  ISO14001 and ISO45001 are two key certifications that help organisations meet these responsibilities. ISO 14001 focuses on environmental management systems, while ISO 45001 addresses health and safety management systems.  Peter Caines, Rolls-Royce SMR Health, Safety and Environment Manager, commented: “Gaining this certification demonstrates that we have the appropriate systems, tools, and specialists in place to deliver our mission with environmental considerations and safety at the forefront.  The certification process recorded several areas of good practice, and this achievement is a validation of the excellent work and outstanding efforts of all involved.” Achieving these certifications demonstrates a commitment to sustainable and safe operational practices and is a crucial enabler for sustainable and responsible growth. #RollsRoyceSMR #WeAreSMR #DesignedForDelivery

Rolls-Royce SMR has enlisted GSE Solutions to develop a power station simulator, as it continues to mature the design of its SMR technology and remains on track to complete Step 2 of the Generic Design Assessment this summer.   GSE Solutions is a world leader in advanced engineering and workforce solutions across the clean-energy and power industries. This simulator will play a key role in Rolls-Royce SMR’s programme to develop, verify and validate the performance and control systems of its unique ‘factory-built’ nuclear power plant. It forms part of a much wider programme of development activities that are focussed on ensuring the ‘delivery-certain’ nature of the plant.   David Dodd, Rolls-Royce SMR Engineering Director, said: “Commissioning a simulation and test platform is another stride towards deploying the first Rolls-Royce SMR power plant. The work with GSE is part of our ‘digital-first’ methodology and our truly modular approach to developing new nuclear power – a reliable source of clean, affordable energy for the UK and the rest of the world.” #RollsRoyceSMR #DigitalFirst #Netzero Great British Nuclear, Department for Energy Security and Net Zero https://lnkd.in/dkn6XCQy

Rolls-Royce SMR is ready to make a transformational contribution to the UK economy.  A commitment to build and operate a fleet of Rolls-Royce SMR power plants will result in a contribution of up to £54 billion to the UK economy between 2025 and 2105.  The Gross Value Added (GVA) figure will be generated by the manufacture, build and operation of a fleet of Rolls-Royce SMR’s factory-built power plants.  This programme of work has the potential to create more than 15,000 long-term, high-skilled jobs – with a large percentage of these roles based across the north, midlands, and North Wales.  Already with a 700+ strong UK-based team, Rolls-Royce SMR is prepared for another significant ramp up in staff – including an intake of new apprentices and introducing new entrants to the nuclear sector.  Rolls-Royce SMR is committed to working proactively with the communities in which it operates to maximise local benefit and create a positive lasting legacy. #RollsRoyceSMR #Netzero #SocialValue #Nuclear #WeAreSMR Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, HM Treasury Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities

Today, Rolls-Royce SMR has submitted its tender response to Great British Nuclear (GBN) as part of the process to select small modular reactor technologies for deployment in the UK.  This is an extremely exciting time for Rolls-Royce SMR which stands ready to move rapidly to the next phase. Selection by GBN before the end of the year will unlock supply chain investment, job creation and enormous opportunities to export this unique product to countries around the world that are seeking to strengthen their energy security with a long-term, low-carbon solution. #RollsRoyceSMR #NetZero #Nuclear #Growth #Investment Great British Nuclear Department for Energy Security and Net Zero

The Rolls-Royce SMR is #designedfordelivery… this unique ‘factory-built’ nuclear power plant is a radically different approach to deploying well established nuclear technology. This results in significant advantages over ‘traditional’ onsite construction - including improved quality control, shorter construction times and increased safety. Recently, Rolls-Royce SMR opened a £multi-million facility in Sheffield to manufacture and test prototype modules. This is further example of how this ‘home-grown’ technology can lead the nuclear renaissance in the UK and demonstrates a long-term commitment to infrastructure and the skills of the future.
