Conclusions you reach with data are only valid if they correctly interpret your data set. In many organizations, the responsibility for collecting and aggregating data is distributed, so it can be hard to ensure that everyone who uses a data set understands the limitations of the signals in that pipeline. As an example, many companies make important decisions about what events constitute an “active user,” and these decisions are reflected in the pipeline code. Changes to a pipeline may not be communicated to all downstream users, leading to misinformed conclusions even from correctly executed analyses. With attention to growth mindset, you can encourage your teams to reject shallow explanations of human error for said failures and focus on how to gain greater understanding of these complexities and push the boundaries on what you believe to be static, unchanging context outside your sphere of influence. Will Gallego walks you through the structure of postmortems used at large tech companies with real-world examples of failure scenarios and debunks myths regularly attributed to failures. You’ll learn how to incorporate open dialogue within and between teams to bridge these gaps in understanding.

Web performance optimisation has been gaining ground and is slowly getting more of its deserved recognition. Nevertheless, much of our time on the web is still used up by waiting. To decrease our wait time and improve the web’s overall performance, this integral part of user experience needs further promotion. Waiting and the perception of time itself, is reason enough to explore some of the psychological effects time has on our users, too. Passing time also plays a big role in the evolution of technologies. Through the history of HTTP we have reached the latest version as HTTP/2, which will turn some of our existing web performance best practices on their head and into the new anti-patterns of today.

Stream processing is a crucial component of modern data infrastructure, but constructing an efficient and scalable stream processing system can be challenging. Decoupling compute and storage architecture has emerged as an effective solution to these challenges, but it can introduce high latency issues, especially when dealing with complex continuous queries that necessitate managing extra-large internal states. In this talk, we focus on addressing the high latency issues associated with S3 storage in stream processing systems that employ a decoupled compute and storage architecture. We delve into the root causes of latency in this context and explore various techniques to minimize the impact of S3 latency on stream processing performance. Our proposed approach is to implement a tiered storage mechanism that leverages a blend of high-performance and low-cost storage tiers to reduce data movement between the compute and storage layers while maintaining efficient processing. Throughout the talk, we will present experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach in mitigating the impact of S3 latency on stream processing. By the end of the talk, attendees will have gained insights into how to optimize their stream processing systems for reduced latency and improved cost-efficiency.
