Networks & Infrastructure Key indicators to watch for: Government investment in school’s network upgrade project to receive continued support Changes in the funding model for schools to enable this Schools connecting to local high speed fibre networks (‘loops’), often as part of a wider scale community-based MUSH network The emergence of shared services across these networks that will potentially enable schools to save money in some of these key areas and allow access to deep wells of resources School access to the KAREN network, resulting (at least in the short term) in an inevitable digital divide emerging between those schools that can connect and those that can’t. 1
School Network MoE research shows few schools with internal networks that meet standard Currently funding the bottom 300 schools to upgrade Includes need to bring switches, hubs, routers and servers up to standard 1
Regional Loops Several regions progressing with plans to develop a “local fibre loop” for schools Money from Broadband Challenge contributing to this Provides ideal environment for shared services, content, and technical support. Recently formed “SuperLoop” group is now sharing ideas and information on linking these groups together 1
KAREN Kiwi Advanced Research and Education Network See  http://www.reannz.co.nz Currently linking universities and CRIs Plans to incorporate schools 1

Advanced Networks KAREN will allow NZ to link to established advanced networks across the world: 1
New Generation Collaboration KAREN will allow for the use of next generation tools such as “video grids” - linking large numbers of people from all over the world, as well as the use of 3D immersive virtual experiences 1

BECTA on VISTA Becta calls on the ICT industry to ensure that computers for the education marketplace are delivered with a choice of Office productivity suites available, which ideally should include an open-source offering. The ability for schools to exercise choice is further restricted by interoperability difficulties and Becta is calling on Microsoft to improve its support for the ODF interoperability standard. http://publications.becta.org.uk/display.cfm?resID=28199 3

Informal Learning An increasing number of students exercise their ability to learn in ways that fall outside the formal education system. Need to consider the impact on: School - home links and interactions? Curriculum? Assessment? Qualifications? Tools and access? 7

Networks & Infrastructure Key indicators to watch for: Government investment in school’s network upgrade project to receive continued support Changes in the funding model for schools to enable this Schools connecting to local high speed fibre networks (‘loops’), often as part of a wider scale community-based MUSH network The emergence of shared services across these networks that will potentially enable schools to save money in some of these key areas and allow access to deep wells of resources School access to the KAREN network, resulting (at least in the short term) in an inevitable digital divide emerging between those schools that can connect and those that can’t. 1
