I am one who thoroughly enjoys travel. But travel often comes with challenges - mostly small but sometimes big. Recent travels found me stranded without documentation. With the guidance of friends, I embraced the city in which I found myself (btw - Bordeaux is lovely) and altered my plans. One friend commented how I make lemonade out of lemons... but these are the circumstances I found myself in and my response to them was my choice. So, while I had not planned to make this a stop, I took advantage of a tour while here, met some lovely people and enjoyed some beautiful wine and food. Next I deal with my unfortunate issue and get back to my planned travel. Great article by Harvard Business Review regarding strategy during times of volatility. My hometown (favorite) supermarket, H-E-B had a framework in place when the pandemic hit (focused on hurricance response). They were able to make adjustments quickly to manage the ever-changing scenario that we found ourselves in. Authors O'Keeffe, Harris and Kimson note, "If leaders want to continue creating value in the era of volatility, they must still focus on adaptability. But they’ll also need to revive strategies that boost investment in two other capabilities that have fallen out of favor in recent years: resilience and prediction. I found this to be so true for me. I believe in working hard and playing hard... with the joy being in the journey. In our fast-paced, constantly connected world, I sometimes fail to set aside moments for introspection. I am preparing for a much-needed holiday and will take this time to recharge and gain clarity amidst the chaos. I grabbed my journal to ensure I capture my thoughts along my journey… taking time for self-reflection. At the Museum of Southern History, once located in Sugar Land, Texas, they displayed a variety of regiment flags colonists fought under during the American Revolution. So when did the U.S. unite under one flag? On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress passed a resolution stating that “the flag of the United States be 13 stripes, alternate red and white,” and that “the union be 13 stars, white in a blue field, representing a new constellation.” In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson marked the anniversary of that decree by officially establishing June 14 as Flag Day. Many know that the lyrics for “The Star-Spangled Banner” are taken from a poem by Francis Scott Key… but did you know that the words are set to the music of “To Anacreon in Heaven” – a popular British drinking song written by John Stafford Smith. Did you know that the “U.S. Flag Code” states that the actual flag should not be used as apparel, bedding or drapery.
