Our all-staff Homecoming last month was more than just skill-building and future-focused discussions—it was about connecting outside of the work. From our Greatness Games, a thrilling team relay, to our internal speaker series featuring colleagues' personal stories, in-person moments are essential for fostering strong relationships and a vibrant company culture, particularly for a hybrid organization such as ours. For ideas of how to increase connection, check out SYP Partner Carina Cortese piece, “3 rituals to increase connection in the workplace—no matter how you work”: (https://lnkd.in/gC83kBmE)

We all want to be more creative. But, we also need to be efficient. Our jobs (and capitalism) incentivize us for productivity. Our brains can default to the easiest path to an easy outcome. True creativity requires an open mind, risk-taking, and the possibility of failure, all of which can contradict our instincts and the momentum of productivity. If strategy is the oxygen for business, discovery is the oxygen for creativity. To truly innovate and create anew, we need both. What do we do?

Last month during our company-wide Homecoming, we took a refreshing “Seeing Tour” to Central Park. From group discussions to solo wanderings, stepping out of the office allowed us to observe the world around us and connect with colleagues in new ways. Sometimes, the best ideas and connections happen when we break from routine and enter a discovery mindset. Seeing Tours are one of our favorite methods to inspire and spark fresh perspectives.

Effective coalition-building continues to be a focus for us and our clients. This week, we published the Coalitions Builders' Guide in partnership with The Aspen Institute. The guide shares what we've learned about the 'how' of effective coalition-building after interviewing dozens of coalition builders, leaders, and practitioners in climate and beyond. If you are thinking about forming a coalition, the guide can help clarify aspirations and lay the foundation for effective collaboration. If you are already running a coalition, it can help you sustain momentum. The guide can be downloaded here: https://lnkd.in/g_-ietMQ Thank you to Mikhael Cohen, Sarah Kurland, Derrick Barreiro, Claire Kesson, Nicolas Maitret, María Ortiz Pérez, Greg Gershuny, Ingrid Irigoyen and Taylor Goelz for bringing this work to life.

Another highlight from last month's company-wide Homecoming was our ninth Learning Day, focused on climate action. As climate becomes a greater focus for us internally and with our clients, we took the opportunity of having everyone in NYC to host a panel with a stellar group of experts—Miranda Massie, Director of the The Climate Museum, Satish Rao, Chief Product Officer at Newlab, Matthias Muehlbauer of OnePointFive (opf.degree)—moderated by Alex Blumberg, co-founder of DaisyChain Energy and Gimlet Media. Thank you to our guests for a fascinating discussion, covering topics such as how to enable corporate action, effective ways to engender buy-in on sustainability, the business value of climate initiatives, and coalition-building for impact.

"As a designer, the shift from in-person work to hybrid work opened my aperture for how I express and practice design." SYPartners' hybrid working model allowed Senior Designer Ellen Rose to apply her design practice to new, unexpected creative outlets. (And as a result, she is featured on the latest season of "Diary of an Old Home" on HBO Max and Discovery+!)
It's hard to believe that it's been four years since I first started working remote/hybrid. Designers who also work from home—How does your home environment influence how you think about and practice design? Have you picked up any new creative outlets since working from home? #design #workfromhome #hybrid https://lnkd.in/gKdpKskG

Sue Walsh (Principal, Design at SYP and faculty at School of Visual Arts) on what is lost when we use AI:
Forty-five thousand years ago, someone drew a pig in a cave. Today we have a “rainbow everything with presents and strawberries and cats” by GPT and my four year old daughter. Making is fundamentally human. AI is an accelerant, churning out stuff that is useful, fast and easy. But does it produce meaning beyond utility? I can see AI's creeping influence on what we create (or prompt) and share, marching towards a visual monotony, making our individuality opaque. Van Gogh once said, “The only time I feel alive is when I'm painting.” Would his relationship to creating art be different if he used “the right prompt”, rather than laboring through each day, finding his salvation through creating his art? If we outsource the act of making to AI, we must question what we are losing along the way.

There is no future of work. There are many futures, each waiting to be designed. At SYPartners, we’re working with the leaders who are taking the first step and reevaluating old assumptions to respond to the new realities of work. Last week, my colleague Sabrina Clark and I traveled to Stockholm to speak at the Leaders of Design Council’s annual conference to share what we’ve been seeing across industries on the future of work and help this membership of world-class design leaders reimagine their businesses. Thank you to Keith Granet, Dana-Christine Colla, and Marc Szafran for the opportunity to engage your extraordinary community. #futureofwork #leadership #AIculture #hybridwork

Everybody is talking about AI, but there isn’t enough reflection on how we talk about it. Allison F. Avery (she/her) and I wrote an article exploring the metaphors we use to describe AI. And how leaders must choose them carefully based on the behaviors they want to spark in their organizations. https://lnkd.in/d2g9zY2W
