This past Wednesday, on #WorldEnvironmentDay, we were honored to attend a special address by United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the American Museum of Natural History. In his speech, which is linked below, Guterres emphasized the surpassingly urgent need for global climate action, calling for immediate efforts to phase out fossil fuels and secure a just transition. We’re grateful for the opportunity to join in-person (in one of the world’s great museum rooms, the Hall of Ocean Life at the American Museum of Natural History). And we’re even more grateful for the work of the Secretary-General and his Climate Action Team (Selwin Hart, Esther Agbarakwe, Syeda Showkat, Ploy Achakulwisut). They are doing incredible work to push for international collaboration and the end of fossil fuels. The Climate Museum is hiring! We are currently seeking a full-time Special Assistant to the Director and an undergraduate, part-time Mellon Fellow in Climate Humanities and Social Justice. Through the AMP Grant program, we were able to provide engaging, arts-based climate education programs for underserved youth attending Lower East Side public schools. We welcomed over 300 NYC students to see the Climate Museum’s exhibition, THE END OF FOSSIL FUEL. Students learned about the intertwined climate and inequality crises, the meaning of climate justice, and the related victories that activists have achieved over the years. At the end of each tour, students discussed the importance of climate action, and wrote postcards to Mayor Adams about their localized climate priorities. Students also made climate commitments, which remained in a collective action installation for the duration of the exhibition. Last month, we welcomed a group of students from High Point Regional High School for a climate justice workshop at our exhibition. The workshop was designed to prepare them to lead their school’s upcoming symposium on climate justice. Led by our Youth Programs team, the workshop explored climate justice, climate communication, and collective action. The students were equipped with ways to take climate action and activities to use at their symposium. We had such a great time working with this dedicated and passionate group of students, and we can’t wait to see what they bring to their symposium in May!

With Cecilia Rubino and Sarah Montague (The New School), Darian Dauchan (Poet/Musician), Chantal Bilodeau (Arts & Climate Initiative), Lanxing Fu (Superhero Clubhouse/Big Green Theater), and Ben Williams (Elevator Repair Service Theater). 💬 Thursday, 4/25, 7pm 💬 In “False Solutions: Carbon Capture, Plastics Recycling, and Green Colonialism,” three expert will explore three areas of industry deception that are designed to continue business as usual without opposition from the public.
