Excited to share McKinsey & Company new report on Asians and Pacific Islanders (API) in Hollywood -- the research shows that while there’s been a surge in content featuring API characters and storylines, more than two-thirds of API consumers are dissatisfied with the authenticity of their representation in film and television. What’s at stake? Addressing these perceptions could unlock a $2-4 billion opportunity per year for the industry. Key takeaways from our new report: - While API representation has grown over the past 20 years, API actors are still underrepresented in US-produced content. - There are specific hurdles for API content in showcasing genuine characters and narratives, such as race-neutral films and animated series. - Behind-the-scenes gatekeepers are essential to ensuring that API stories and characters are portrayed authentically. - The film and television industry has a multibillion-dollar opportunity to capitalize on this trend. Fascinating to learn in more detail about how participatory budgeting was combined with randomly sampled/stratified borough assemblies in NY. Sounds like a model that needs to be practiced more and awareness of it spread more widely. Taiwanese Americans have played a major role in creating Silicon Valley for the past 50 years, since the early days of semiconductor invention. These industry legends were the founders of the Monte Jade Science & Technology Association, and I am honored to serve on the board today. This documentary tells the stories of these unsung heroes. In PolicyLink's series in Stanford Social Innovation Review so far, our colleagues have explored what achieving a flourishing multiracial democracy requires of each of us, and what it could begin to look like for governments. In this new installment written by Jeff Bradach and I, we explore what this foundational change will require of nonprofit institutions. To play their part, our institutions will need to embrace their own transformation, build from a past rooted in charity and move toward a model of liberation—a future where our laws, regulations, customs, and institutions are structured so all people can thrive.  This work calls us to struggle, and may look different depending on a nonprofit’s starting point, mission, assets, and challenges. Hard decisions will need to be made and missteps will happen. Until we bring love and accountability to our internal practices, external partnerships, and the nonprofit sector more broadly, we cannot expect to realize a nation where everyone can flourish. I’m delighted to share my latest contribution to the @Stanford Social Innovation Review, part of the series; "Realizing A Multiracial Democracy for All," by @PolicyLink. In this piece, I delve into the profound gap between the founding promise of equity and the stark realities of today's America. As we confront challenges to democracy on multiple fronts and witness the strain on our governing systems after nearly 250 years, the need for profound shifts in governance and economic systems is undeniable. Drawing upon historical precedents and grassroots movements and acknowledging the limitations of our current constitutional framework, I envision a future led by the Northstar of equity, where our institutions and laws are reimagined to authentically reflect the diverse needs and aspirations of all people—from affordable housing to safe drinking water. This vision will require a collective effort across sectors: government, politics, nonprofits, and philanthropy. Together, we can create a society where everyone can flourish and where decision-making processes are participatory and inclusive. When it comes to the world of #philanthropy, this is especially critical when considering that 95% of many foundations’ assets are invested in public markets. Interesting article from The Atlantic: "The Rise of Poverty Inc." by Anne Kim. One reflection on this: Every sector benefits in some way from the status quo, not just the “poverty industry.” And there's a good chance that even the work that each of us does in the name of the public good in some small way is contributing to the status quo, albeit inadvertently. This is a tension across all sectors that is good for policymakers-and advocates-to think about how to challenge in a constructive way. Thanks Bernadine P. Okay, last one and then I am done for today. The The Wall Street Journal provided analysis on the ineffectiveness of divestment as a lever for change. Maybe if these students actually stopped all the vandalizing and went to class at their globally recognized economic, finance, and social policy programs they would actually do something constructive. "The parallel frequently made to the boycott of apartheid South Africa isn’t a very good one. That boycott lasted decades, mainly involved consumers, not investors, and had serious financial effects on the country’s exports. Cutting academic ties with South Africa didn’t have such a clear impact as protesters today believe, research suggests. But the financial effects, or lack of them, bear examining. And there’s a very instructive parallel: misguided demands to quit investments in fossil fuel companies to slow climate change. Environmentalists think that if universities and others sell coal and oil stocks, it will influence fossil fuel production. It hasn’t, and it won’t, for three reasons that also apply to Israel. "
