Mr. Owl confidently proclaimed it takes three licks to get to the Tootsie Roll center of a Tootsie Pop. And while Mr. Owl’s individual methodology could be questioned — just as the actual number may be one that “the world may never know” — asking an impossible question like “how many licks” is still as vital as ever. I thought of that impossible question when I read Bizrate Insights recent “The State of Customer Loyalty” study, particularly in its findings that 67% of consumers say it takes at least four purchases to consider themselves loyal to a brand. This, the study says, “means every interaction and nuance in the customer experience matters.” I guess it’s not how many licks that’s important … so much as it is to make every lick count. In deciding where to shop, 68% said price and value was the most important factor, followed by high-quality products (56%), free and fast shipping (42%), and excellent customer service (29%). Loyalty programs ranked seventh with 18%, but the study says “what gets people to shop with your brand won’t be exactly what makes them a loyal shopper.” “Core factors like cost, quality, and free and fast shipping top [that list], but when it comes to true loyalty, consistently delivering on these foundational components is key,” the study says. “1 in 3 consumers say the biggest reason they’re loyal to their favorite brand is that their purchasing experience constantly matches their expectations.” In order to deliver that experience and consistency, the study recommends utilizing technology to monitor customer sentiment throughout the journey. 81% of the shoppers surveyed said they’re more likely to buy from a brand with a loyalty program than one without one, but “effective loyalty programs go beyond rewards.” “Beyond the must-have loyalty program benefits, brands can satisfy and delight customers when they go the extra mile through surprise gifts and offers,” the survey says, pointing to the 57% who said offers and gifts are the most wanted perks. “Nearly half say they’d most appreciate upgraded services as an extra program feature (46%), and a third want the erasure of point minimums. … True loyalty requires meaningful touchpoints that make customers feel appreciated, engaged, and rewarded as individuals throughout their entire experience with your brand.” 67% said a personalized experience is somewhat or very important when shopping online, with more than half saying that loyalty programs tailored to their preferences (61%) and special offers based on their shopping habits (57%) were most valued. “When it comes to personalization, consumers seem to be saying it’s important to get the fundamentals right,” the study says. “Prioritize loyalty programs and offers tailored to their individual preferences and behavior, before focusing on other features like virtual try-ons and digital shopping assistants.” (Photo Source: Bizrate Insights)

In marketing, recipes can often call for a dash or two of overconfidence … for better or worse. Just look at the 92% of marketers who told RPEOrigin that they were very or somewhat confident they could manage their tech migration, despite 62% having three or less migrations in their experience, and “fewer than 4 in 10 … experienced in dealing with a full tech transition.” RPE Origin’s paper, titled “The State Of The Technology Migration Process In Enterprise Organizations,” attempts to both identify the “factors that drive changes in the martech stack” and, in the process, “burst the confidence bubble here.” More than two-thirds (67%) said improving efficiency and productivity was their top reason for seeking changes in their martech stacks, followed by reducing costs (52%), staying competitive (48%), and aligning with organizational goals (46%). “While only 18% cited ‘lack of platform innovation’ as a motivator for switching platforms, it likely underscores a broader concern among decision-makers about innovation's impact,” the paper says. “Change entails costs, prompting cautious approaches to adopting new tools. However, when a critical tool falls behind, marketers seek alternatives despite potential higher costs, recognizing the greater expense of staying on outdated platforms.” When it comes to actually addressing and changing parts of the martech stack, half said their budgets were the biggest challenge. After that, 41% said integration complexities, 39% said implementation delays, and 38% said data migration issues. “Change is risky,” the paper says. “Migrations are hard. “Generative AI may have launched the movement, but AI of all types makes marketers more productive, effective, and strategic employees.” That’s out of the newest marketing report from Klaviyo, who surveyed more than 1,500 global marketers about current AI use and future AI hopes. And while the largest percentage of AI use in the last 6 months has been generative (56%), other types of AI — including predictive (53%), conversational (53%), and self-optimizing (43%) — have also gained traction “for help with curating insights, making smarter decisions, and better serving their customers.” Of the top reasons marketers are currently using AI, 37% said customer service and support, 36% said image generation, 36% said data analysis, 35% said research and idea generation, and 34% said website personalization. “When we asked marketers what they wish they could use AI for,” the report says, “nearly half of respondents identified AI applications that are already here — things like performing marketing analytics, comparing their company’s performance to similar organizations, and predicting customer behavior and attributes.” Klaviyo’s point about the AI technology for these uses already existing is spot-on, with Mirabel Technologies’ recent launch of the Media Mate suite of AI tools sure to please those 45% who are wishing for help in creating marketing campaigns. A recent survey of online shoppers has found that extra costs were the top reason they’ve abandoned their carts, with almost half (48%) saying shipping, tax, and other fees pushed them to leave before checking out. Baymard Institute’s data found the average cart abandonment rate to be 70.19%, based on calculations of nearly 50 different studies with e-commerce statistics. In calculating the 48% who left because of extra fees — along with the 26% who left because they didn’t want to create an account and 25% who didn’t ultimately trust the site with credit card information — Baymard segmented out the “I was just browsing”-type responses.
