About us
Varicon Aqua is an original equipment manufacturer based in the UK. We have over 20 years' experience designing, constructing and deploying algae photobioreactors and aquaculture production systems. We design, supply, install and commission both laboratory and industrial scale platforms for the cultivation of algae to a broad range of global partners. To this end we employ a dedicated team of technicians, engineers and algal biologists who understand algal bioprocesses; from wastewater treatment to bulk and fine chemical production. This unique experience gives us a competitive advantage when working with clients, allowing us to provide bespoke photobioreactor systems for a wide range of applications. We pride ourselves on our ability to support our clients from business conception through commissioning and exploitation. Our ability to troubleshoot and support our clients through every phase, engineering, biological or market is a core strength of our business. To date we have deployed over 200 photobioreactor systems across the world from 5 L to 400,000 L scale. These installations include manifold horizontal tubular systems, like our bestselling BioFence™ platform, as well as serpentine systems such as the Phyco-Flow™. Newer developments include our vertical column photobioreactor, the ALR; and our internally illuminated reactor, the Phyco-Pyxis™. All our systems are built to high specifications using precision manufacturing processes. In addition to photobioreactor systems we also specialise in providing the auxiliary equipment necessary for running a successful algal platform. This includes equipment for process monitoring and control, as well as apparatus for downstream processing and lighting. Furthermore, we supply a broad range of nutrient and culture media as well as concentrates, aquaculture feeds and water treatments. Find us on Twitter @VariconAqua

As a former live feed technician (way back in the day) I made more than my fair share of live feed sieves. These little concentrator rinsers look like a 5 minute job but in fact it takes hours to bring these together in a way that ensures your live feed isn't leaving with the wash water whilst ensuring they are rinsed thoroughly with the minimum damage and stress. Typically when rinsed one pulls the central standpipe out, holds it at an angle against the drain to slow the rate of drainaige however; this can be fiddley and annoying so we adapted the drain pipe on these units to simplify and ease the transition from level to level, nice, simple and safe. The last thing you want is all your live feed sticking to the mesh!! These two units will be sieving barnacle larve in a hatchery in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of West Africa. Please drop us a line if you're ready for an upgrade! Everything is 'made to measure'! #barnacles #livefeed #rotifers #artemia #copepods #hatcheries #sieves #larvae #finfish

Another Phyco-Lift project delivered and completed in Thessaloniki, Greece. A great little project incorporating many features such as temperature control, pH dO2, OD & PAR monitoring and control Via Variconnect. LED dimming and photoperiod. Automated/manual media delivery via peristaltic. All the usual knobs and whistles with plenty of other options available to suit a very diverse range of micro and macro algae research applications. The Phyco-Lift is a versatile platform which can be expanded linearly or vertically by adding another module or exchanging the vertical tubes from 1.4mL to 2.5m or 5.5m if you have the height in your facility. A great way of increasing volume without the need to invest in additional control etc. If you're looking for a versatile tubular system come and chat with us, much of what we supply is based on our customers specific requirements. #phycolift #photobioreactor #microalgae #macroalgae #variconnect

For a change, not an algae related post but something associated. Rotifer harvesting and rinsing. Many hatcheries grow rotifers to feed fish larvae for example. Utilisng a range of substrates such as algae pastes and formulated diets to feed and enrich the rotifers. This process can be quite intensive with very high rotifer densities being achieved during the culture process, typically 1000-3000 rotifers/ml. As such, there is a high metabolite and particulate waste loading in the cultures which must be separated from the rotifers before they can be preconcentrated and fed into larval rearing tanks. To acheive this it is commonplace to utilise 'concentrator/rinsers. Typically hand made in the hatchery (I made many myself back in the day as a live feed technician) Some designs can be a little 'rough' around the edges and not very efficient, in some cases doing more harm than good to the precious live feeds. To avoid such damage and losses it is important to utilise an efficient design such as the Varicon Aqua CR's. Supplied at various sizes to suit production capacities, utilising high quality materials such as 316SS woven meshes for rotifer and artemia rinsing, 20-150 micron subject to species and life stage. Food grade MDPE tanks, light weight supporting framework. Incorporating concentric O2 and air diffusers to facilitate life support, efficient rinsing and mitigate blocking of the sieve. Camlock connections on inlets & outlets for rotifers, wash water and harvesting. Bespoke designs available which can be utilised for SS, S & L type rotifers, fresh and marine species. Artemia, barnacle larvae, copepods, daphnia etc. This fine example just arrived in Norway for one of our customers rearing Wrasse. Feel free to contact us if you feel like an upgrade!! hashtag #Concentrator #rinser #rotifers #artemia #livefeed #larvalrearing
