A few weeks ago I took a small detour on my way to work to grab a coffee and croissant from No 10! I and others were there to hear Andrew Griffith and Paul Freemont speak about the UK's vision for Engineering Biology, including an investment of £2 billion over the next 10 years. It was great to meet academics and companies from across the industry, all of whom were eager to share stories and advice, and to offer support where they could. I was at the event representing Phycobloom where we are using Biology to create algae that can secrete their oils to unlock truly sustainable biofuels. If you're interested in helping to build a decarbonised transport sector then please reach out! A special shoutout to Larry The Cat who saw us all off at the door!

It was a pleasure to have the Extantia team visit our lab yesterday. Ensuring #biofuels live up to their potential is certainly a challenge, but one we know we can overcome thanks to the hard work and ingenuity of our brilliant team!

Rarely do you have the opportunity to experience the authentic #creative essence of an entrepreneur than by stepping into their Garage (or lab🧪🥼🥽🧫). When you do, it's undeniably exhilarating. Yesterday, alongside the exceptional Extantia team, we had the privilege of visiting Phycobloom , pioneers in the re-engineering of #Algae for future #Biofuels. What struck me most was the ingenuity of the founders in devising remarkably simple yet effective solutions, often surpassing Legacy and expensive methods. Picture a wine refrigerator controlled by an Arduino as an early algae sample Incubator, a CO2 source powered by simple SodaStream International, Ltd. bottles, a Confocal Fluorescence Microscope sheltered (Darkened) by a Keter garden shade, and an #LCMS (liquids chromatography mass spectrometer) resurrected for less than a thousand pounds, thus saving over 100K£... and this is only fractions of the examples we witnessed. Reflecting on this journey, it's evident that surrounding yourself with creative minds and empowering them to think outside the box is paramount to success, especially when building hardware. Kudos to the Pycobloom team for their outstanding work, thank you Carlota Ochoa Neven Du Mont for organizing such an amazing #London #AllHands John C. Waite Ian Hu, PhD

We are thrilled to announce that Phycobloom has been selected as a participant in the Engineering Biology CR&D competition run by the fantastic team at Innovate UK! This funding will allow us to develop a genetic toolkit to better harness our algae and propel our technology forwards. At Phycobloom, we're using synthetic biology to unlock the power of algae in order to create truly sustainable biofuels. Chlorella sorokiniana holds immense potential across a range of industries and this project will be key to harnessing it. If you're interested in learning more about what we're up to then give us a follow and stay tuned for updates!    #EngineeringBiology #CRDcompetition #Sustainability #Innovation #Phycobloom #Chlorella #GeneticToolkit Read more: https://lnkd.in/eg6Zwcvg

Building ambitious technology is incredibly challenging. At Phycobloom, we have given ourselves an ambitious goal of making algae biofuels a commercial reality: something that many people have written off completely. However, we have been plugging away at the fundamentals and our progress is being recognised. Today, I’m delighted to announce the completion of our oversubscribed seed(ish) round. This successful round was led by Bunge Ventures, the for-profit global investment arm of Bunge, and supported by Entrepreneur First and Kibo Invest, as well as our amazing angels and investors that have believed in us since the beginning. It also goes without saying that none of this would be possible without the amazing team at the Breakthrough Energy Fellowship. Bunge, a leading global agribusiness, is bringing its experience in the industry to help accelerate Phycobloom journey to scale, allowing consumers more access to sustainable biofuels. With this additional investment we are going to be hiring for several new and exciting roles; for more details check out our website (https://lnkd.in/e_dWnxVA). Thank you again to all of our investors and to our team members that see huge challenges as great opportunities! #biofuels #algae #fundraising #startup #climatechangesolutions
