JAMSHEDPUR: In a latest incident of ragging at the govt-run Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital (MGMMCH), a section of students has complained to the National Medical Commission (NMC) that the senior students often brawl on petty issues and trouble juniors.
The complainants, who belong to 2021 and 2023 batch, said the senior boys of 2018 batch often come at night in a drunken state and play loud music, forcing the juniors to dance on popular numbers.
The junior boys have named five students, accusing them of mental and sexual harassment.
Strict action will be taken if charges are proven, says principal
They alleged that on the night of June 29, the named five boys had come to their hostel room in an inebriated state and insisted the juniors drink with them. They were then told to undress and dance.
The NMC, on receiving the complaint on July 1, directed the MGMMCH management to inquire into the matter and file an action taken report.
"We have convened a meeting of the anti-ragging cell (ARC) of the college on July 5, wherein the matter will be discussed and investigated thoroughly," said college principal KN Singh on Thursday.
The principal said strict action will be taken against the boys if the charges are proven. He added that deputy SP (Patamda range), Ram Bachan Kujur, also inquired into the incident with the 2021 and 2023 batch students.
The latest complaint is the fourth reported incident of ragging in the college between January and July this year. On April 15, five girls of the 2022 batch were reprimanded for thrashing students from the same batch. On April 23, a 2021 batch student was suspended from the class for 15 days for harassing a junior boy.
