Crackdown on drink driving in Ranchi
Ranchi: Acting on the state-level review meeting discussions held on road safety on Tuesday, Ranchi police conducted a drive against drink driving and crime across the district on Wednesday night.
The number of accidents in the state rose from 67 between 1 April 2023 and 31 May 2023 to 79 between 1 April 2024 and 31 May 2024. The number of people killed in the two months was 74 in 2023 and 94 in 2024.
Barricades were erected at various places under all police stations of the district and the drivers underwent breath analyser test.
Police took strict action in drink-driving cases and other violations of traffic rules.
Police also questioned several suspects during the operation to ensure not only observe traffic rules but also prevent criminal activities.
Ranchi SSP Chandan Kumar Sinha said, “Operations would continue in future to curb road accidents and crime rate. I appeal to people to follow traffic rules and inform police about people moving under suspicious circumstances.”
Additional director general of police (ADGP) Sanjay Lathkar had held a meeting with police officials, including IGs, DIGs, SSPs, SPs, and officials of the transport department, on road safety on Tuesday. He had expressed concern over the rise in road accidents in Ranchi , Gumla, Khunti, Chaibasa, Jamshedpur, Garhwa, and Ramgarh. He asked the personnel to use speed guns to prevent rash driving.
