Cough may persist longer with allergies

Cough may persist longer with allergies
BENGALURU: Cough occurs when viruses cause airway inflammation, according to Dr Ravindra M Mehta of VAAYU Pulmonary Wellness and Rehabilitation Centre, Jayanagar. Pharyngitis, laryngitis and bronchitis can cause cough.
"The lining of the oral cavity, the voice box or the bronchi can get inflamed, leading to persistent cough. Unless it settles, it keeps irritating the airways.
Depending on the amount of inflammation, the cough persists," he explained, adding that if the patient has a tendency for allergies, the cough may persist longer.
"It is important to hydrate yourself well when you have a lingering cough. Syrups may give you some temporary relief. But if the cough doesn't settle in 5-7 days, better see a doctor," he advised.
