A totem of undying is a combat item that can save a player from death if the player is holding it in their main hand or off hand. It is dropped by evokers, which spawn in woodland mansions and raids.
Obtaining[edit | edit source]
Mob loot[edit | edit source]
Evokers always drop one totem of undying upon death, which is not affected by Looting.

If the player is holding a totem of undying in the off-hand or main hand slot and receives otherwise fatal damage, the totem saves the player from death. The totem of undying must be in the player's hand for it to work — it does not work if it is in the hotbar, unless selected. The totem of undying also works in Hardcore mode.
The totem can be used only once, and disappears when used. It does not prevent death caused by void damage or the /kill
command. In Java Edition, it also does not prevent death caused by an arrow of harming if the arrow kills the holder with just the arrow's physical damage, as the arrow's Instant Damage effect is applied after the totem has activated, effectively killing the player a second time.[2]
When a totem of undying is activated, it restores 1, removes all existing status effects and grants several positive status effects:
- 45[JE only] or 40[BE only][1] seconds of Regeneration II
- 40 seconds of Fire Resistance I
- 5 seconds of Absorption II
When activated, multiple green and yellow particles are displayed around the player that held the totem. A screen effect also plays, showing a totem of undying hovering in front of the player's screen, similar to the animation seen when a player receives the Bad Omen effect or the Hero of the Village effect in Bedrock Edition, or enters the same area as an elder guardian.
Any mob that can hold a totem of undying (in a hand or in the mouth) is revived, if killed while it is holding the totem. The totem functions exactly as it does with players, although undead mobs do not receive Regeneration as they are immune to it.

Trivia[edit | edit source]
- In the New Nintendo 3DS Edition, the totem of undying can be put in any hotbar slot to activate it, due to the lack of an off-hand slot in that version.
- Being able to obtain totems of undying in raids without exploring woodland mansions is considered a "massive game play design flaw" by Mojang.[6]
