We are immensely proud to have presented two scientific, double-blind peer-reviewed papers at the PLEA 2024 Conference in Wroclaw last week alongside key stakeholders driving the agenda in sustainable architecture and urban design.  The recently published papers are the result of a four-year collaborative research effort on the Living Places concept together with talented colleagues, partners and industry leaders including: Jens Christoffersen (lead author), Steffen Maagaard, Kasper Benjamin Reimer Bjørkskov, Siobhan Rockcastle, Ambra Guglietti, Rasmus Søgaard and Lone Feifer.    As lead authors, Senior Sustainable Building Specialist, Lucile Sarran, and Sustainable Buildings Specialist, Nicole Di Santo, presented some of the fundamental findings from the research efforts, diving into how it is feasible to build ultra-low carbon homes with first-class indoor environments using existing materials and technologies:    🏡 'Living Places: Healthy Homes for People & Planet. A Single-family Home with Ultra-low Carbon Footprint' unpacks how the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) was performed with a design optioneering tool that analyses the carbon footprint of each building component and system to make optimal design decisions. The paper results highlight that Living Places achieves three times lower GWP than the maximum threshold of 12 kgCO2eq/m2 per year in the Danish Building legislation.     🏡 'Living Places: Healthy Homes for People & Planet. A simulation-based evaluation to ensure optimal indoor environment' focuses on how simulations were used to ensure an indoor environment with optimal daylight and fresh air. These tests resulted in many important findings that impact well-being, such as optimising occupants’ circadian exposure by placing windows where they spend time in the morning.      As industry partners of this global event, we are thrilled that the presentations received positive feedback and interest from an audience of dedicated professionals working and researching within sustainable architecture and urban design exchange knowledge and practices. We believe in our proactive commitment when advocating for sustainability and taking on a leadership role to accelerate the building industry towards a sustainable future that includes daylight and fresh air.  Special thanks to Barbara Widera.   Both papers are available now to read as part of the PLEA proceedings (free access): https://lnkd.in/eD8QaWek

Flat roof windows deliver 3 times more daylight than façade windows ☀️ As flat roof windows capture light from the sky directly from above, it allows them to bring in more natural light throughout the day. Facade windows, on the other hand, are limited to capturing light from the side, which can be obstructed by nearby buildings, trees, or other obstacles, and the angle of the sun. Flat roof windows are therefore significantly more effective at maximizing daylight, and your indoor environment.

(Re) thinking Resilience – connecting the traditions of the past with innovations for the future of the built environment   VELUX is proud to be the industry partner at the PLEA 2024 Conference in Wroclaw. The PLEA conference is a global platform where dedicated professionals working and researching within sustainable architecture and urban design exchange knowledge and practices. The PLEA Association engages worldwide in the discourse on sustainable architecture and urban design, and comprises a community of several thousand professionals, academics, and students from over 40 countries. In partnering with PLEA, we aim to emphasise our commitment to this objective and to join in on the dialogue about paving the way there. Hope and resilience for Ukraine! 🌱🏡 We believe in the necessity of launching both immediate and long-term projects to support the rebuilding of Ukraine. Our contribution, while modest in the larger picture, is focused on creating healthier and more sustainable environments for children in new care homes. In collaboration with SOS Børnebyerne, we're leading the way in establishing alternative care environments in Ukraine. These homes are a beacon, demonstrating how to combine social sustainability with healthy, affordable, low-carbon living. This initiative aims to reform the childcare sector in Ukraine while showcasing the scalability and adaptability of our Living Places concept to various needs and local contexts. Since the war broke out in Ukraine, Market Director at VELUX Ukraine, Yuri Tkachenko, has been dedicated to the country's recovery efforts. He emphasizes that the five principles of our Living Places concept fit the Ukrainian context perfectly, addressing the urgent need for reconstruction without adding unnecessary emissions. His insights underscore the project's positive impact on Ukraine and its people. We aspire for this project to inspire others to take action - both in transforming the building industry and supporting Ukraine’s reconstruction. We are grateful for the support from the rest of the partners: Villum Foundation, Viessmann Foundation, Grundfos Foundation | PDJF, Bitten & Mads Clausens Foundation, FONDATION SOMFY, DOVISTA, Flügger group A/S, VELUX Ukraine, Kromann Reumert, and Export and Investment Fund of Denmark.
