(Re) thinking Resilience – connecting the traditions of the past with innovations for the future of the built environment VELUX is proud to be the industry partner at the PLEA 2024 Conference in Wroclaw. The PLEA conference is a global platform where dedicated professionals working and researching within sustainable architecture and urban design exchange knowledge and practices. The PLEA Association engages worldwide in the discourse on sustainable architecture and urban design, and comprises a community of several thousand professionals, academics, and students from over 40 countries. In partnering with PLEA, we aim to emphasise our commitment to this objective and to join in on the dialogue about paving the way there. We believe it is crucial to advocate for sustainability and to use our influence to take on a leadership role to accelerate the building industry towards sustainable change that includes daylight and fresh air. As part of our effort to democratise knowledge, all conference participants will receive a copy of the VELUX Design Booklet. Director of Sustainable Buildings Lone Feifer will present a keynote on connecting the traditions of the past with the innovations of the future. Her presentation focuses on healthy buildings for people and planet, with Living Places as an example of the positive impact buildings have on people, communities, and our ecosystems. Built by Nature's upcoming Annual Summit #BbN23 (October 26, Amsterdam) will highlight numerous stories of our network's progress in adopting the use of timber and biobased materials in construction projects, and in doing so, helping to accelerate a transformation of our built environment. The informal evening networking session will hear from visionary speakers, including a "chat show-style" discussion moderated by Built by Nature Board member and biobased building specialist Pablo van der Lugt and BbN's Head of Communications Karianne Kraaijestein. Among their guests: Cécilia Gross, Architect Partner at VenhoevenCS architecture+urbanism, providing insights into the unique design and use of mass timber in the award-winning Aquatics Centre in Paris; Oskar Norelius, Architect Partner at White Arkitekter, describing the scope and breakthrough possibilities of the Stockholm Wood City project -- set to be the world's largest wooden city with its planned 7,000 office spaces and 2,000 homes, covering some 250,000 square metres. We're convinced you'll be energised by these examples of how to challenge the status quo; the collaboration between game-changers; overcoming obstacles, and the essential learnings emanating from each of these exciting projects. It's not too late to register for the evening reception -- space is limited -- find more details here: https://lnkd.in/eVWjS7fv #summit #masstimber #biobasedmaterials #sustainablearchitecture

While Regenerative Design represents the upcoming architectural design practice, we can’t overlook the continued need to design buildings to remain resilient during and after natural hazard events. Without increasing disaster resilience, we will fall even more behind on our sustainability and regenerative goals. Buildings designed to be resilient will help the community to recover economically more quickly after a disaster and continue to evolve with nature. https://bityl.co/L1ja

Sustainable Heritage: Illuminate a Brutalist Gem! A new competition is calling on architects, designers, and students to reimagine a 1970s heritage-listed building in Melbourne's western suburbs. The Illuminate Living Building Challenge Design Competition, in partnership with Development Victoria, invites creative minds to transform the brutalist gem into Australia's most sustainable heritage-listed building. The goal of the competition is to create a structure that generates its own energy, captures and treats water, and truly contributes to a regenerative environment. The winning design will be awarded the Living Building Challenge Certification, the most rigorous standard for sustainable building in the world. This competition is a chance to shift the paradigm and showcase that existing buildings can be transformed into sustainable marvels. Vanessa Trowell, Chair of the LFIA board, rightly emphasizes that sustainability doesn't always mean starting from scratch. The essence of sustainability lies in retrofitting, in reimagining, and in creating spaces that thrive with regenerative energy. Are you up for the challenge? Join hands with like-minded innovators to shape the future of sustainability and heritage. Interested parties can register for the competition on the LFIA website. #BuildingTalks #DesignCompetition #HeritageBuilding
