Earth’s atmosphere contains six times as much water as all the planet’s rivers combined. Kenyan entrepreneur and 2023 Rolex Awards Laureate Beth Koigi uses atmospheric water generators to pull water out of the air and is already providing people in arid regions with hundreds of thousands of litres of fresh water. Koigi’s next venture is a series of “water kiosks” planned for the heart of one of the largest refugee camps in Africa, Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Integrated Settlement in northern Kenya’s extremely arid region of Turkana. A local shopkeeper who has been set up with the first unit will sell the water it generates at a fair price. This will make the system self-sustaining, with the machine paying its own operational costs. Discover more on bit.ly/a_desert_oasis #Rolex #RolexAwards #PerpetualPlanet

Beneath the turquoise waters of Australia’s World Heritage-listed Ningaloo Coast is one of the planet’s largest fringing coral reefs. Although highly protected and recognized for its biodiversity, many of its animals depend on a less-protected area on the other side of the cape: Exmouth Gulf. Mission Blue / Sylvia Earle Alliance Hope Spot Champion Ben Fitzpatrick has led his team on an expedition to the gulf’s unexplored waters. Using the latest technology in drones and underwater photography, they are surveying its incredibly biodiverse wildlife and proving how important the area is to the region and to the nearby Ningaloo Reef.
