In space no one can hear your scream (from the movie Alien). Below 1,000 meters, the ocean is eternally dark and nobody can see their attacker. And below this depth lots of life exists. Here are some pretty cool videos of things explorers have found deep underwater. Just don’t run into the giant phantom jellyfish. They don't sting their prey. They wrap around them. Giant Phantom Jelly have a 1 m (3 ft) pulsing, umbrella-like bell and four arms that can grow up to 10m (33 ft) long. The deepest fish ever observed, where the pressure is over 830 times greater than on Earth's surface, was the a curious-looking snailfish at 27,349 feet (8,336 meters). It was in the “hadal zone", a region named after Hades, the Greek god of the underworld, and home to the deepest of the seas. I rather like “Dumbo” the albino , deep-sea octopus found at a depth of 1,682 meters (5,518 feet). #oceanscience #exploration

Today is only 10 hours, 3 minutes and 22 seconds in Perth. The June Solstice marks the beginning of astronomical winter for the southern hemisphere and the start of summer for the northern hemisphere. This is an exact moment when the Sun’s declination equals 23.4 degrees south, as seen from the Earth. The line of latitude where the Sun passes directly overhead during the June solstice is known as the Tropic of Cancer. Chicxulub: The asteroid that killed the dinosaurs At the end of the Cretaceous Period 66 million years ago, an asteroid the size of a city collided with Earth. The Chicxulub impactor, as it is called, was somewhere between 10 and 15 kilometres in diameter. The collision was devastating: rocks from deep within Earth’s crust were raised 25 kilometres high and a rim of mountains taller than the Himalayas formed around the crater’s edge. The asteroid hit at 20 kilometres per second from an angle of 60 degrees above horizontal – just right for sending the maximum amount of vaporised rock into the atmosphere. One famous impact is the Chicxulub event, linked to the extinction of dinosaurs. The impact would have resulted in a catastrophic explosion, a vast cloud of dust, and a change in the planet's temperature that would have wiped out the majority of life. Asteroids and their possible influence on our planet are considerably better understood today than they were in the past. Additionally, we have created the technology to locate asteroids and even divert them if required. By crashing a small spacecraft into an asteroid in 2019, the European Space Agency's (ESA) Asteroid Impact Deflection Assessment (AIDA) mission successfully illustrated the idea of asteroid deflection. Being able to comprehend the effects of an asteroid strike and acting to prevent it distinguishes us from dinosaurs and other forms of intelligent life. In the event of an asteroid impact, we are not defenceless. We can prevent extinction by using our understanding of physics to deflect asteroids. This is a potent illustration of the distinction between a life that is self-aware and one that is not. The life that is conscious of itself may comprehend the world and act to improve it. A life that lacks self-awareness can only respond to its surroundings. What makes us human is our capacity to comprehend the world and effect change in it. It is what enables humans to establish civilizations, produce works of art, and study the cosmos. It also enables us to defend against dangers like asteroid collisions. Even though we are still a young species, we have advanced rapidly. Although we can achieve great things, we also carry the risk of self-destruction. We must use caution when using our power and expertise.
