Today I had the pleasure of attending a *Strategies for profitability in Aged Care* webinar online and hearing from Industry leaders of the challenges and opportunities they have in front of them as they continue to grow their organisations. The key takeaways included: 💠 AN-ACC Optimisation - ensuring optimised rosters are managed with efficiency according to industry regulations. 💠 Streamlining business units - Bringing together finance, clinical and admission teams to ensure they can limit occupancy problems and ensure sustainable margins are possible. 💠 Emergence of Additional Services - Driving revenue through new market opportunities as providers look to move into Home Care, Retirement Living etc. 💠 Inhouse staffing vs Offshore staffing - enabling a strong L&D culture to upskill & retain staff with lower skilled experience. With the new changes in regulations and care requirements expected from Aged Care providers, there's a lot of planning and foreword thinking that needs to be involved to ensure an aged care provider can continue operations in the long-term.

The Australian Payroll Association’s 2019 Benchmarking Report found that the average payroll manager had just 2.6 days of training a year and only 6% of domestic payroll departments report having a focus on training. “Yet they are responsible for millions of dollars in payments and ensuring those payments meet the law". The more time I spend in the payroll industry, the more I realize that the outsourced payroll model makes more and more sense. For myself, moving from the IT Service industry to Payroll was going from familiarity to the unknown. But in this were opportunities to learn completely new things and broadening my mindset. Transforming payroll from an admin task to a strategic business function is brilliant, as it can be used for things like workforce planning, turnover rates, labour costs, identifying trends and future staffing needs. When used well, payroll data can also provide insights into employee demographics and skill sets for workforce planning and talent acquisition, as mentioned in the article. Key insights from the GPA Symposium's 👇 Some of the Yellow Canary team (Leanne, Tanya, Courtney & Marcus) recently attended the Global Payroll Association (GPA) Symposium in Sydney and Melbourne. So great to connect with other Payroll Professionals, catch up with old colleague's and meet new people. We gained some great insights into global payroll trends and the future of the field. Here are some key takeaways: ️  🛎 On demand pay: We discussed the pros and cons, including benefits for cash flow, and potential ethical considerations. 👩‍💻 Payroll workplace trends: The GPA revealed that 80% of payroll professionals said compliance keeps them up at night in a recent survey. 🤖 AI in payroll: We explored the potential of AI and Machine Learning to streamline mundane tasks and support data analysis, but we’ll waiting a bit longer until AI can interpret complex modern awards. 🔐 Cybersecurity: Vital discussions were had on safeguarding payroll systems against cyber threats and effective communication in case of data breaches. 🎓 Payroll is a career: Some exciting initiatives were discussed, like a foundations course for high school students, offering a pathway into the payroll profession. I absolutely loved the GPA's emphasis on payroll as a career, as opposed to payroll as a job. Looking forward to seeing the vision unfold. As a long term self-confessed payroll geek, I could not be happier for what the future of payroll looks like 🤓 .
