UK-based queer collective Big Dyke Energy has launched a fundraiser to preserve the country's LGBTQ+ nightlife scene and keep queer raves alive. The 'Save Our Spaces' campaign aims to raise £10,000 initially, with funds set to provide grants for struggling clubs and event organisers impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. In an effort towards safeguarding diverse nightlife offerings, these monies will help ensure continued access for all those within the LGBTQ+ community who have relied on such spaces as sanctuaries of self-expression. According to BDE member Shiloh Dobie: "Underfunded nighttime economies risk losing more than just dancefloors; they risk dismantling hotbeds for progressive social change." The initiative reflects a broader trend of grassroot efforts targeted at protecting marginalised sectors within hospitality from financial crisis due to measures against COVID-19 spread. Amongst the frenzy of last week's travel, I was particularly proud to have been asked to do my very best Deborah Meaden impression (wig optional, and of course other "Dragons" are available 😉 ) at the first ever Stellar Standard Dragons Den style judging panel; hosted by FAIRER Consulting. During the panel, me and my fellow esteemed judges Cherron Inko-Tariah MBE and Bernadette T. gently grilled the co-Chairs of one of the many networks who've applied to be recognised and to achieve the Stellar Standard in 2024. 🏆 👏 👏 👏 The Stellar Standard is the UKs first national benchmarking and accreditation process for Employee Resource Groups and aims to recognise the truly exceptional Staff Networks that are in existence across the UK. Whether they're led by activism, offering employee support and connections, or as critical friends to an organisation's DE&I work, many networks work tirelessly, and often in the background. Achieving the Standard is a way of acknowledging their hard work and achievements, and recognising true excellence. As a long-term champion and supporter of Staff Networks, having worked with and for ERGs for nearly 25 years, it was an absolute pleasure being able to hear about the incredible work being done in the name of creating and maintaining a truly inclusive, respectful and cohesive workplace. Well done to everyone who's put themselves forward this year (and no, you won't get any early indication of who's achieved the Standard from me...my lips are sealed!). 😉 At FAIRER Consulting, we're proud of our partnerships and the opportunity to work together with like-minded organisations to achieve a fairer workplace for everyone. An informative decision by the Full Bench of the Fair Work Commission in a matter I acted in. Hilton Adelaide applied to extend the default period of a 2006 enterprise agreement on the basis employees, as a group, would be better off overall. The agreement contained a clause providing for wages to be 1% above the award and a number of other less beneficial provisions. The Commission found that the 1% obligation did not apply to the Hilton because they had only become a party to the agreement following a transfer of business and had given an earlier in-conference undertaking to continue the practice. The Commission found that undertaking, and any other undertaking offered in relation to the less beneficial provisions, could not be taken into account in determining if employees were better off as the power to extend under the FW TPC Act (unlike the Commission's power to accept undertakings under s 190 of the FW Act in approving new agreements.) Key takeaway: Undertakings won't cure BOOT concerns for zombie agreements
