Can’t shut Platform 1 for 29 days: Railway Board
Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Railway Station renovation project is continuously facing hurdles, as the Railway Board has now expressed dissatisfaction with the requested block for upgrading platform number 1, and has ordered a review of the plan. According to information, the Railway Board has stated that platform number 1 cannot be blocked for 29 days because several important trains, including the Shatabdi and Vande Bharat Express, operate from this platform.
They have suggested that the upgrade be completed in a shorter period.
According to officials, a proposal to upgrade platform number 1 was sent to the Ambala division. After receiving permission from the Railway Board, work was supposed to begin from July 1, but the Board has now ordered a review of the proposal, causing a delay in the upgrade work. “An air concourse will connect platforms 1 and 2 and provide other modern facilities for passengers. Once completed, the redeveloped station is expected to offer a more comfortable and efficient travel experience. Additionally, pillars need to be prepared to connect the concourse to platform number-1, along with upgrading the track and performing signal and other electrical work,” said a source. During the closure of platform number-1, trains like Shatabdi Express, Vande Bharat, and Jan Shatabdi will be shifted to other platforms to ensure smooth operations. “This could cause significant inconvenience to passengers, as the lift is operational only on platform 1, while lifts on platforms 2, 3, and 4 have been dismantled. Therefore, if platform number-1 remains closed, it could lead to considerable difficulties,” said one official.
The Board's concern about blocking the platform for an extended period of 29 days is valid, as it could disrupt the schedule of important trains like Shatabdi Express, another officer added.
However, sources have added that redevelopment work is crucial for improving the station's infrastructure and providing better amenities to passengers. The air concourse connecting platforms 1 and 2 will offer a more seamless and comfortable experience for travelers. The upgradation of tracks, signals, and electrical work is also essential for enhancing safety and efficiency. “To minimize the inconvenience caused to passengers during the renovation period, railway officials must make adequate arrangements on platform-2,” reads the letter by the railway baord. Temporary sheds should be provided to protect passengers from harsh weather conditions like heat and rain. Clear and regular communication about the progress of the redevelopment work and any changes in train schedules is essential to keep the public informed and prepared, it added.
