Introduction
 Google's Project Ara is a Modular smartphone.
 User can customize device hardware and look of the phone
 Opens up mobile devices market for parts manufacturers
History
 First Idea of Modular phone is by the startup company Phonebloks in
December 2012 .
 Launch the first video of the modular phone in September 2013.
 In October 2013 Phonebloks connect with the Motorola owned by the
google.
 Google had sold Motorola to Lenovo in January 2014 , but Google kept
ATAP (Advanced Technology and Projects) and Project Ara, which
became Google Ara
Needs
 Our Electronic market it changes every day
 So increased lots of e-waste
 For single upgrade we need to change the whole phone
Components
 Project ARA have two core components.
1. Endoskeleton
2. Module
• Ara Smartphones are built using modules inserted into metal
Endoskeleton frames known as "endos”.
• It acts as the
switch to the
on-device
network
linking all the
modules
together.
• It consists of
network
circuits and
interfaces for
modules

Modules
 Modules can be anything like a display, processor , keyboard , battery,
gamepad, camera, speaker.
 Modules can be build by any developer using the open source MDK (
Module Developers Kit ) which is already available.
 Modules can be in different size.
 Module swapped between
different phones.
