Session: The Data Center Network Evolution: Journey to the Programmable Fabric
Presenter: Robert Zalobinski, Technical Solutions Architect
Date: October 6, 2015
Interconnecting devices allow computers to communicate over networks. Routers connect wireless devices to networks without cables, and find the fastest data path. Switches create networks and use CAM tables to route data to devices via MAC addresses, while hubs broadcast data to all devices. Bridges connect multiple LANs by recording data sources and destinations. Wireless access points connect devices to LANs but lack IP addressing and firewalls unlike routers.
The document discusses interconnection facilities and trends in the interconnection business. It finds that network-dense interconnection facilities charge higher prices due to their value, but competition is increasing as competitors work to build similar facilities. Demand for interconnection is driven by growth in internet traffic and services that require improved network performance and pushing of content to network edges. This is increasing demand for interconnection options in both large and small markets.

Many inventions over the past 70 years lead up to the modern datacenter. This infographic features some of the milestones that changed datacenter history.
The insatiable desire for more capacity and faster datarate arising from the explosion in bandwidth-intense applications necessitates deployment of higher capacity WDM systems in both inside datacenter and metro datacenter interconnects systems. This demand for higher datarates is reflected by the numerous standardization and study groups commenced in the last couple of years. While the standardization scrutinizes the requirements for smooth migration for a datacenter interconnect with distances of upto 40km, the upgrade to high capacity DC metro access networks (beyond 40km), where no standardization exists, needs to address the economic viability together with greater space, power and bandwidth efficiency requirements. This presentation focuses on both of these areas and elucidates the current trends and evolving technologies to deal with the dynamically shifting landscape of DCI.

Fluttercon 2024: Showing that you care about security - OpenSSF Scorecards fo...Chris Swan
Have you noticed the OpenSSF Scorecard badges on the official Dart and Flutter repos? It's Google's way of showing that they care about security. Practices such as pinning dependencies, branch protection, required reviews, continuous integration tests etc. are measured to provide a score and accompanying badge.
You can do the same for your projects, and this presentation will show you how, with an emphasis on the unique challenges that come up when working with Dart and Flutter.
The session will provide a walkthrough of the steps involved in securing a first repository, and then what it takes to repeat that process across an organization with multiple repos. It will also look at the ongoing maintenance involved once scorecards have been implemented, and how aspects of that maintenance can be better automated to minimize toil.
Quality Patents: Patents That Stand the Test of TimeAurora Consulting
Is your patent a vanity piece of paper for your office wall? Or is it a reliable, defendable, assertable, property right? The difference is often quality.
Is your patent simply a transactional cost and a large pile of legal bills for your startup? Or is it a leverageable asset worthy of attracting precious investment dollars, worth its cost in multiples of valuation? The difference is often quality.
Is your patent application only good enough to get through the examination process? Or has it been crafted to stand the tests of time and varied audiences if you later need to assert that document against an infringer, find yourself litigating with it in an Article 3 Court at the hands of a judge and jury, God forbid, end up having to defend its validity at the PTAB, or even needing to use it to block pirated imports at the International Trade Commission? The difference is often quality.
Quality will be our focus for a good chunk of the remainder of this season. What goes into a quality patent, and where possible, how do you get it without breaking the bank?
** Episode Overview **
In this first episode of our quality series, Kristen Hansen and the panel discuss:
⦿ What do we mean when we say patent quality?
⦿ Why is patent quality important?
⦿ How to balance quality and budget
⦿ The importance of searching, continuations, and draftsperson domain expertise
⦿ Very practical tips, tricks, examples, and Kristen’s Musts for drafting quality applications

Are you interested in dipping your toes in the cloud native observability waters, but as an engineer you are not sure where to get started with tracing problems through your microservices and application landscapes on Kubernetes? Then this is the session for you, where we take you on your first steps in an active open-source project that offers a buffet of languages, challenges, and opportunities for getting started with telemetry data.
The project is called openTelemetry, but before diving into the specifics, we’ll start with de-mystifying key concepts and terms such as observability, telemetry, instrumentation, cardinality, percentile to lay a foundation. After understanding the nuts and bolts of observability and distributed traces, we’ll explore the openTelemetry community; its Special Interest Groups (SIGs), repositories, and how to become not only an end-user, but possibly a contributor. We will wrap up with an overview of the components in this project, such as the Collector, the OpenTelemetry protocol (OTLP), its APIs, and its SDKs.
Attendees will leave with an understanding of key observability concepts, become grounded in distributed tracing terminology, be aware of the components of openTelemetry, and know how to take their first steps to an open-source contribution!
Key Takeaways: Open source, vendor neutral instrumentation is an exciting new reality as the industry standardizes on openTelemetry for observability. OpenTelemetry is on a mission to enable effective observability by making high-quality, portable telemetry ubiquitous. The world of observability and monitoring today has a steep learning curve and in order to achieve ubiquity, the project would benefit from growing our contributor community.

Companies are recognizing technology as a fundamental sustainable competitive advantage
.
As an ever-greater share of economic and customer value is delivered through digital services, data centers are fueling our digital economy.
Today’s enterprise for example…88% of workloads and 80% + of spend is accounted for…Leaving little room for innovation.
Leveraging cloud is a path to rationalizing cost out and striking the right balance.
Security and control continue to be natural sticking points, Equinix can help address.
Focusing in on data, there are many aspects the Enterprise needs to solve for:
Data Growth: Key variables are data volume (how much), variability (number of types of data) and velocity (the speed of data processing). At Equinix, the Ad-IX allows advertising participants to quickly analyze the ad opportunity and bid in real time.
Sovereignty & Compliance: Are country specific regulations requiring that data must not leave the point from which is originated. What is made in Germany must stay in Germany. On October 6, 2015 the European Court of Justice invalidated the US/EU Data Transfer Pact. “The so-called safe harbor agreement was flawed because it allowed American government authorities to gain routine access to Europeans’ online information.”
Integrated Cloud: A key concern of Enterprises is vendor lock-in. CSPs typically make it easy to migrate (free ingress) but hard to leave (cost to egress). With large data sets, accessing CSPs over the Internet becomes problematic as well as expensive vs direct, proximate interconnection.
Availability of the data center is fundamental. As we live in a 24/7/365 world, we need the data center to be always on, every day, all the time.
In a world where mobile devices are the new standard interface to IT Systems, we need to ensure a quality experience for the user or customer experience
In a global world we need to be ready for growth and scale.
To energize productivity for birds-of-feather companies and organizations, we need to have common place for buyers and sellers to exchange data, information and transact.
As the Hybrid IT Model emerges as a new norm, we need to enable the journey to the hybrid-cloud.
Background:
As covered in our discussion on Interconnection Oriented Architecture there are 3 main challenges associated with disruption:
Market challenges: shifting from cost take out to growth; global competition and growing to new markets & locations; M&A
Business challenges: Shift from a product to a product and service company; Omni-channel to engage your partners, customers and employees; workplace is becoming virtualized
Technology challenges: SMAC (social, mobile, analytics, cloud); Internet of Things; Real-time collaboration => all change business processes
This disruption is leading to a transformation of the business architecture and the need to become an interconnected Enterprise
Where you are able to:
Respond instantly via any channel
Growth via digital ecosystems
Make real time decisions
Innovate quickly
Table stakes…without it cant to cloud
To address the requirements of the data center, these five imperatives should be considered:
Some the fundamental tenets for funding your own data center have also changed.
Real Estate economics
New Generation infrastructure
Software Defined hardware
Economics have changes
The move away from fully outsourced arrangements.
Allowing for the segregation of the physical layer from the management
Equinix has fostered ecosystems with aggregate revenues ranging from the leading edge of real-time advertising bidding to the multi-billions dollar financial services community of high frequency trading. Today we’re now the leader in Interconnection for the Public Cloud ecosystem.

DH is a solution framework that serves as an extension of Performance Hub and addresses enterprises’ demand for data intensive applications. <Read the benefits – paraphrase>
Integrated Cloud Storage
Data Hub provides the data center locations needed to store performance and capacity tiers of data and metadata close to their sources
(enterprise offices, Internet, public clouds), in addition to providing private high-bandwidth links to public clouds for the archive tier
through storage gateways.
• Avoids slow (and possibly expensive) data movement by locating data repositories close to the data sources
• Improves access times to active data and metadata by placing data within Performance Hub locations
• Supports multi-region deployments for seamless disaster recovery
• Eliminates the problem of data silos thanks to a central multi-tenant data platform
Big Data Analytics:
Data Hub and Performance Hub enable private data processing clusters like Hadoop (in Data Hub) for analytics workloads that leverage
the scalable, elastic compute power of the public cloud for business intelligence applications.
• Avoid the expensive and time consuming step of copying data over the WAN. Data Hub allows instantaneous private and direct
access to enterprise storage systems for applications running in public cloud
• Multi-tenant data processing platform gives disparate stakeholders within your organization (e.g., marketing, sales, manufacturing,
engineering) the ability to run simultaneous big data jobs
• Realize proximity and improved accessibility to external data sets for data enrichment and real time analytics
Data protection and replication
Data Hub implementations within a metro enable multi-site deployment for data redundancy, allowing data to be synchronously replicated
by your enterprise between Equinix International Business ExchangeTM (IBX¨) data centers within a metro.
• Take advantage of high availability between sites
• The Data Hub infrastructure allows your enterprise to realize continuous replication of data for disaster recovery sites (including geo
redundancy). You can also employ snapshot backup solutions that are optimized for locality and performance
• Tiered data backup and recovery strategy allows your IT teams to easily strategize a near-zero Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and
Recovery Time Objective (RTO), crucial features of any disaster recovery strategy
