Keane won a contract to design, develop, and operate a smart card-based ticketing system for public transportation in Victoria, Australia. To overcome challenges from multiple stakeholders and a geographically dispersed client, Keane adopted an Agile program management approach. Keane's solution fused Agile and structured CMMI methodologies to allow for rapid development, integrated testing, and reduced risk. This enabled fast deployment, operations, and reduced strain on system modules. Three releases have been delivered on schedule using this approach.

The process: The innovation: Keane won a tender for design, development and operation of a world- class smart card-based ticketing system for the Transport Ticketing Authority, State of Victoria in Australia, under a Keane-led consortium called KAMCO (Keane Australia Micropayment Consortium Pty Ltd.). The main objective was to dramatically enhance the user experience (travel) for the residents of and tourists to the state of Victoria, Australia. Keane’s solution handles the complexity arising out of multiple stakeholders involved in devices, software, hardware etc., that make the cost of failure high. The company adopted a program management approach of rigorous discipline to overcome challenges related to the geographic spread of the client. In order to create a user experience driven solution, Keane worked closely with the business users and innovated a process that met its goals. The process innovation fused Agile and structured CMMI methodology to ensure rapid “development and integrated testing,” and reduce the overall risk significantly. This also allowed for fast deployment, swift operations and lesser load on various modules. Keane completed the design, build and release of 65 percent of the functionality required for the solution in record time. • To-date, three releases comprising eight iterative incremental builds have been delivered. • Demonstration of the prototype and working functionality of the solution was done recently and Proof Point 2 (development milestone) was successfully demonstrated on in November, 2006.
