AECOM, the managing partner for the AECOM Joint Venture with Citadel CPM, Inc., Jensen Partners and JGM for the highly-anticipated County of Los Angeles Harbor-UCLA Medical Center’s $1.7 billion, 72-acre campus capital improvement program, recently won the CMAA Southern California Chapter’s 2024 Project Achievement Award for Innovation and Implementation of Technology for the Campus Underground Utilities project, in the Government/Public Works category. The Harbor-UCLA team’s innovative approach to the project, which fell under the federal, state and local projects under $50 million category, encompassed a “Front-End Engineering Design (FEED)” methodology integrated with Building Information Modeling (BIM). The FEED process involves coordinating the project and issuing shop drawings, instructional bulletins and design drawings simultaneously, enabling the design and construction of related components to take place concurrently. BIM was used for project coordination and to conceptualize potential solutions “on the fly” as the project was delivered in the field. This allowed for both analyses of future phases and simultaneous collaboration among multidisciplinary teams for better decision-making in current phases. Our project partners and guest event attendees included Citadel CPM Inc., Azar Kattan, Fadi Rassam, PE, CCM, Rick Grenier, Gillian Tiede and Tawfik. Special thanks to our AECOM team: Nick Pappas, Troy Barbu, Jon-Erik Cendejas, Brooke Duncan, CCM, Assoc DBIA, David Rojas, Daniel Carney, Matt Fulton and James Fan We are proud to be recognized as a part of this important work as we advance and innovate our healthcare communities. At last week's 30th Annual Project of the Year Awards Banquet, the CMAA Metro NY/NJ Chapter awarded the Queens Garage and Community Space a Project of the Year award in the $60-100 million category. Located in Queens, NY, this project is one component of the NYC Department of Design and Construction's (DDC) more than $8 billion Borough-Based Jails Program, for which the AECOM-Hill Joint Venture is a program manager, and marks the DDC’s first use of design-build delivery. Located within the Queens Civic Center Complex, the 600-space garage and adjacent 25,000-square-foot community space facility will serve the public in general, the future detention facility staff and visitors, and existing courthouse and municipal offices in the complex. AECOM recently celebrated the completion of the new 109,000-square-foot Orange County Sanitation District (OC San) headquarters in Fountain Valley at a ribbon-cutting ceremony. After three years of construction, the new building is a vision come to life featuring a design that prioritizes employee well-being and the community with welcoming spaces and an immersive indoor/outdoor educational exhibit. AECOM provided construction management services, including project management, resident engineering, field engineering, special testing and inspection, document control and progress documentation throughout the construction as well as the commissioning and close-out phases. The project, which includes a three-story building at OC San’s 100-acre Fountain Valley plant to house more than 300 employees and a painted steel open-air pedestrian bridge, focused on innovative yet cost-aware sustainability goals in both construction and operations. AECOM was thrilled to bring many precedent-setting construction systems such as mass timber and chilled beam HVAC to this outstanding project. We are proud to be a part of this important work as we advance and innovate communities. The John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center has served as a catalyst for cutting-edge research within the U.S. federal government since 1970. Now, it has a new, state-of-the-art building to match its track record of innovation. The new Center replaces six previously existing buildings with a highly energy-efficient, climate-resilient structure that houses multiple agencies — and is on track to achieve LEED Platinum certification. At 400,000 square feet, it includes offices and laboratory spaces with capacity to house up to 1,300 personnel from numerous federal agencies. AECOM is proud to have served the U.S. GSA – New England Region as construction manager as advisor on this project, which was delivered under an exchange agreement and is the first completed building in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s redevelopment of the 14-acre Volpe site within Kendall Square in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Congratulations to our teams and partners for their stellar work on this project, which garnered a Construction Management Association of America New England Chapter project achievement award.
