I'm not surprised that BuzzSumo found that original research drives more links. I often include research data in articles, ebooks and white papers, and I always see a gazillion sites linking to and/or quoting research reports. Companies that produce the actual research definitely create an unfair advantage for themselves on that front, and that's just one of the benefits, in my opinion.
