The latest episode of the ASOS Tech Podcast is now out and in it I had the pleasure to talk about our accessibility journey alongside my lovely colleague and fellow accessibility accomplice Ellie Hadyoon. Thank you Lewis Holmes and Nat Huitson for hosting us, forever proud at how engaged ASOS tech is when it comes to making our platforms more inclusive. #tech #podcast #accessibility https://lnkd.in/dxF2bpQq

Happy one-year countdown to the European Accessibility Act (EAA) deadline for those who observe 🇪🇺 While panic is never advised, now is a good time to understand how this deadline is going to impact your business if you trade within the EU. This way, you can plan your course of action accordingly. With an abundance of confusing and sometimes even conflicting information out there, here are some resources I found helpful to begin untangling this topic: - This article which gives a good, even if brief, introduction to the EAA: https://lnkd.in/db6FUy5v. Also, check out the summary coming from the EU themselves: https://lnkd.in/dWBNrHzW - This blog post by Craig Abbott for a deeper dive, with a focus on the UK: https://lnkd.in/dg42-9tV - Webinar Q&As like this one from Abilitynet, which addresses common questions: https://lnkd.in/d2QUr8hj - From a business case perspective it's useful to keep an eye on the penalties that different EU states will implement regarding non-compliance. So far Ireland have defined theirs as "up to €60,000 and/or imprisonment of up to 18 months": https://lnkd.in/dgRJHeps - Make sure you are familiar with the EN 301 459 standard, which is required by the EAA and extends beyond WCAG. This short article explains the relationship: https://lnkd.in/dSge7hxF

Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day #GAAD so here is a friendly reminder that any effort to make your work more accessible counts, however small it may be. As every year, there are plenty of good events that can be found at https://accessibility.day/, which can inspire you to get started or build on your existing accessibility knowledge. But even if neither of those things is on the cards for you at the moment, you can always set a goal that's realistic or relevant to your situation. That may mean simply having a conversation with your team about accessibility or asking yourself which one of your projects is a good contender for an accessibility revamp and making a plan for that. Awareness days are meant to remind us to move the cause forward so make sure to do that in a way that feels right for you and your work.

So apparently I'm in the top 1% of mentors in design on ADP List for Jan 2024. Which is ironic given that I don't mentor people in design. I would therefore like to use this opportunity to not only demonstrate what is possible when you book zero time off in January (🥲) but to also once again nudge Felix Lee to recognise accessibility as a separate category on adplist.org, and to invest more time improving the accessibility and usability of the platform. Needless to say, I'm happy to help with the latter 🙂 What started as an experiment on my part very clearly proved to me that so many people need support in their accessibility work, and that deserves to be formally recognised, I think. And I would also love to see how I compare as a mentor against other people who mentor in the same subject, rather than design as a whole. Please and thank you 🙏🏻

I'm really excited to be part of the speaker lineup for Inclusive Design 24 this year, after following the event for a couple of years now. Tomorrow morning, 21st Sep, at 10 BST, I'll be talking about chairs as the perfect metaphor for inclusive design, or the lack thereof. Watch and sign up from the link below, and make sure to check out the full schedule of all the talks as well. https://lnkd.in/dvyYimcs

A brilliant project, highly recommended for any London based students!
Business Owner at U Can Too, NCCE Primary Lead & PDL for Teach Computing Kent & South East Hub & Co-Director of Move & Code
Do you know a 12-14 year old interested in technology or dance who is looking for a way to spend 1 week of their summer? Let us tell you about DIGITAL L E A P Digital Leap is a FREE week-long summer school, by Pell Ensemble & Partner Company U Can Too, aimed at exciting young students about the creative uses of technology. Across the week students will explore how physical computing can be incorporated into a performance. They will then ideate, design and build physical computing interactions by embedding their products into their own performance choreographed by the students themselves. That will be shared at the end of each week! Through generous funding, we are delivering this programme twice this summer, and we still have some spaces remaining for our second which will take place across the week of 8th - 12th August in East London. • Week 1 : Aug 1st-Aug 5th at East Summer School : FULL • Week 2 : Aug 8th-12th at Nexus Community Centre, Leytonstone : SPACES REMAINING Registration www.pellensemble/digital-and-coding-1 Interested to know more? Digital Leap is a pioneering week-long summer programme that aims to inspire students to take the jump into a creative digital world. Through collaboration, Pell Ensemble and U Can Too have developed a unique teaching style of movement, programming and physical computing, that will see participants work together to build an interactive digital dance performance based on the theme 'Future Worlds'. This theme will be inspired by the United Nations' #GlobalGoals for 2030 ending the week with a public sharing of the performance. Aimed at students ages 12-14, this programme will generate excitement, build confidence and introduce skills, encouraging students to move forwards with a career in computing and or the creative digital industries. This opportunity is for up to 30 students per week. Due to the funding that we have gained, we are delighted that we can offer all student places on the programme for FREE. Each day includes at least 60 minutes each of dance, computing and design. Alongside this female or female-identifying speakers with careers in creative technologies and the digital sector will speak about their experience in the field. Free lunches will be provided and travel stipends are available to students currently receiving free school meals. No previous experience in dance or computing is needed but those with a pre-existing interest and knowledge-base are also welcomed. Registration at www.pellensemble/digital-and-coding-1 DIGITAL L E A P | Delivered by Pell Ensemble and U Can Too The delivery of #digitalleap is co-commissioned by Week 1: Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Week 2: London Borough of Waltham Forest and East Bank. Let's talk about how some recruiters just refuse to understand the concept of boundaries
This morning I received 2 messages and a Whatsapp message from a recruiter offering me a position for which I've been "head hunted". It's begining to feel like invading someones personal privacy is no longer an issue, and this sort of thing is becomming all too common. As much as I appreciate being in-demand, I don't appreciate this kind of communication. We're all here to do our jobs, but maybe first think if the platform you're using is appropriate. Anyone else had any similar stories? #communication #privacy
