Revolutionary Partnership Announced: How Wandarra and PAPACKS® Aim to Turn the Tide on Plastic Waste in Australia 🌱
Wandarra Pty Ltd, an innovative ag-tech solutions firm based in Townsville, North Queensland, and PAPACKS®, a global leader in sustainable packaging based in Cologne, Germany, are excited to announce a strategic partnership via a recently executed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The parties are currently working together to formalize the Australia-APAC exclusive IP licensing agreement with the target end date intended over the next few weeks.
This partnership aims to transform the packaging industry across Australia and the Asia-Pacific, reducing plastic waste and supporting environmental sustainability by leveraging Wandarra’s regional resources and PAPACKS®’ cutting-edge technologies.
Wandarra, located in Townsville near the Great Barrier Reef, uses its strong logistics network to distribute hemp-based products, emphasizing its dedication to environmental sustainability. Initially partnering with Smart Precinct NQ Queensland, Wandarra focuses on replacing single-use plastics in the fresh produce sector. The partnership also supports a Circular Economy program to develop sustainable packaging solutions, aiming to make the region a leader in this field.
PAPACKS® provides a turnkey solution, including equipment training and commissioning, to ensure seamless production and adoption of sustainable packaging technologies. PAPACKS® contributes expertise from over 75 patent families in hemp processing to optimize product outcomes with HempPulp® over the last seven years.
The production timeline includes initial sample testing in Germany, adjusted for North Queensland consumer preferences, with the Australian production team trained in Germany on the production lines. This will be followed by the setup and transfer of equipment to the Wandarra site, starting in Q4 2024.
Australia produces 5.5 million tonnes of packaging annually, recycling only 49%. This collaboration introduces sustainable packaging solutions to reduce landfill waste and marine litter, enhance industrial hemp cultivation in North Queensland, and position Wandarra as a leader in the Asia-Pacific.
Steve Tiley, CEO of Wandarra, stated, “North Queensland’s unique responsibility to the Great Barrier Reef is underscored by disturbing plastic pollution. Our partnership with PAPACKS® offers an immediate sustainable solution for the food and beverage industry.”
Tahsin Dag, CEO of PAPACKS®, added, “Our partnership aims to eliminate single-use plastics and protect ecosystems like the Great Barrier Reef. By leveraging our innovative technologies with Wandarra’s resources, we aim to impact the packaging industry sustainably in the Asia-Pacific, demonstrating our commitment to environmental protection."

Tahsin Dag, Founder and CEO of Papacks and President of the EMPPA (European Moulded Pulp Producers Association), is advocating for the entire sector to seize new opportunities. With the French government’s recent decision to postpone the EPS ban until 2030, there is a window of time for companies to prepare with sustainable solutions like molded pulp and hemp pulp products.
Tahsin’s message is clear: “When you can imagine it, you can do it! We develop and produce plastic-free, molded pulp packaging solutions. Be prepared and don’t wait until the end!”
The European elections have shifted the political landscape, and we expect more business-friendly directives while adhering to the European Green Deal. This extension should not be seen as a reason to delay but as a chance to get ahead and innovate with eco-friendly alternatives.
Let’s take this opportunity to push forward sustainable packaging solutions and lead the way in environmental responsibility.
