Greetings from “ The Scholar Box” Moving ahead in our sustainability journey, let us understand how combinations of value network actors' intentions and activities affect market change for a sustainable innovation. Sustainable development and the need to protect the possibilities of the present and future generations to meet their needs have created a great societal interest in supporting the development and diffusion of sustainable innovations. The diffusion of sustainable innovations into value networks facilitates and is facilitated by the change of markets towards sustainability; however, this interaction needs further investigation. The authors Outi Keränen, Tuula Lehtimäki , Hanna Komulainen and Pauliina Ulkuniemi examine how combinations of value network actors' intentions and activities affect market change for a sustainable innovation. The authors empirically explore market change related to introducing bioplastics into plastic food packaging value networks. They increase the understanding of market change for a sustainable innovation by showing how not only the actors with direct intentions to support the innovation but actors and activities indirectly related to the sustainable innovation contribute to market change. Such indirectly supportive activities focus on broader sustainability aims and can, for example, change market representations, practices, and norms in favor of the sustainable innovation. The authors propose sustainability layers to understand the diverse sustainability focuses of actors and their relation to the market change in question. Specifically, they contribute to market change literature by broadening the examination scope beyond the most active actors driving market change for innovation. The present study examines the market change for a sustainable innovation with a focus on a multitude of actors within an existing value network and their diverse intentions and activities connected to the market change. To gain theoretical understanding, literature on the intentions of market shapers and market are employed. Qualitative methods are used to examine a plastic food packaging value network, where bioplastic packaging is examined as an example of a sustainable innovation which wider diffusion requires market changes. The study contributes to the literature on sustainable innovation and market change by showing how the market change results from the diversity of value network actors' intentions and activities. The findings provide implications for firms developing and commercializing sustainable innovations to existing value networks where diverse actors' intentions collide. Just stumbled upon some fascinating insights into sustainable packaging trends for FMCG products, and I can't help but share! The shift towards eco-friendly solutions is gaining serious momentum, and it's clear that businesses are getting creative with how they package their goods. From biodegradable materials to zero-waste policies, the industry is buzzing with innovation. One trend that's really caught my eye is the use of plant-based packaging. Companies are turning to materials like cornstarch and mushroom mycelium to create packaging that's not just recyclable but also compostable. It's a game-changer for reducing landfill waste. Another trend is the 'less is more' approach. Brands are stripping back to the bare essentials, cutting down on unnecessary layers of packaging. It's all about minimalism, and I must say, it's refreshing to see simplicity making a comeback. And let's not forget about refillable systems. They're not just for the old-school milkman anymore. FMCG products are now being offered with options to refill rather than replace, which is a huge step towards circular economies. As someone who's passionate about both the manufacturing industry and nature, these trends are music to my ears. It's exciting to see the strides we're making towards a greener future. If you're in the industry and have noticed these trends or have other insights to share, I'd love to hear your thoughts. Or if you're looking to make a career move into a company that values sustainability, drop me a line at Keagan.hood@matchtech.com. Let's chat about how we can make a positive impact together! #sustainablepackaging #FMCG #innovation

Sparxell, a startup pioneering sustainable pigments for cosmetics, has secured a substantial £2.5m investment from a diverse group of backers, including L'Oréal. 💡 Key Highlights: 🌱 Since its inception in 2022, Sparxell has been dedicated to pioneering sustainable solutions. They specialize in creating biodegradable and vegan pigments, sourcing raw materials from plant-based cellulose extracted from waste. 🌱 This approach not only mitigates environmental impact but also aligns with the growing consumer demand for ethically sourced products. 🌱 Dr. Benjamin Droguet, Sparxell's CEO, emphasizes the detrimental environmental effects associated with conventional chemical colorants. He underscores the urgency for industry-wide adoption of sustainable alternatives to mitigate these impacts effectively. 🌱 The Circular Innovation Fund, co-founded by L’Oreal, recognized Sparxell's potential and chose to invest. This investment signals a broader industry acknowledgment of Sparxell's innovative approach and its potential to drive positive change across various sectors. #SustainableCosmetics #EcoFriendlyBeauty #GreenTechnology #CircularEconomy #PlantBasedPigments #BiodegradableBeauty #InnovationInCosmetics #ClimateAction #ClimateChange

Check out this bottle! I love it for four reasons (not including it’s contents - which I also liked): 1. It’s made from rPET, a recycled and recyclable plastic. Yes, glass is recycled of course but PET is apparently far less energy consumptive during recycling 2. It’s designed with distribution in mind: plastic = fewer breakages, less packing and much lighter to transport, funky shape means much less space to transport (our little test of Sunday dinner suggested it takes up a little over 50% that traditional bottle would 3. It’s a design that delivers for all: ESG ☑️ , business costs (and therefore customer price point?) ☑️ easier for frontline employees ☑️ 4. Innovation in an industry that is historically cautious with any change. Few of you will know that I have a small side hussle producing wine from local grapes. So seeing any innovation in my “other” industry is always exciting! Well done The Wine Society (The International Exhibition Co-operative Wine Society Limited)

Realising sustainability in packaging demands a dynamic blend of recycling, composting, and reuse/refill. Deciphering when to implement each solution is an evolving challenge CPG companies are working on. Key factors to evaluate are: • product specifications and the intended use of the product and packaging, • regional disposal regulations, infrastructure, and cultural preferences • materials cost and availability and the technology investments, driving cost increase to consumers 》the ever-evolving landscape of regulations, technologies, and trends. #SustainabilityinPackaging gathered multiple members of the packaging value chain to shed light on new cooperative platforms and new legislation, aiming to establish equitable standards for packaging producers, clients, and recyclers. Core topics were PPWR, design for circularity and label harmonization, which will certainly set the scene for the next generation of packaging. Big thanks to Smithers, Cesar Vargas-Razo, PhD and I really enjoyed this enlightening conference, we'll have loads to discuss at Sagentia Innovation
