We were recently joined by MD Reshma Sheikh and Corporate Relationship Manager Priyanka Chaudhary from MSDUK to update our London team on the progress they have been making in raising awareness and driving business towards Ethnic Minority-owned companies in the UK.   As a long-standing member of MSDUK, we are proud to be actively seeking ways to improve our working practices, ensuring they are ethical and transparent. We are committed to supporting diversity and inclusion, self-auditing to create fair opportunities both within our organisation and throughout our supply chain.   Ethnic Minority-owned businesses contribute approximately £25 billion per year to the UK economy and are often more likely to innovate and export than their non-minority counterparts. With 17% of Ethnic Minority-owned businesses engaged in exporting compared to 10% of all SMEs. Despite their significant contributions, Ethnic Minority-owned businesses often face unique challenges, including access to finance and broader market opportunities.   We are committed to supporting these businesses and fostering an inclusive environment where all business owners can thrive. A big thank you to MSDUK for helping us on this journey and for coming to meet our team. Elaine Pearce MCIPD

Bauer Media Group, the powerhouse behind iconic brands like Grazia Magazine, Greatest Hits Radio, Jazz FM, and Kerrang!, embarked on a mission to create a workspace that celebrates the art of performing. This vision, brought to life by architects spacelab_, resulted in a dynamic environment designed to cater to the unique needs of presenters, copywriters, and administrative staff alike. At Tsunami Axis, we played a pivotal role in this transformation, ensuring the successful delivery of spacelab_'s vision through meticulous furniture procurement. Central to the project was a commitment to environmental consciousness. One of the project's most visually striking features is the terrazzo effect Spectra reception desk, crafted from PET packaging waste. Using PET packaging waste to create furniture is an effective way to reduce environmental impact - for every 1 tonne of PET plastic recycled, it saves 1.5 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions and approximately 88% of the energy needed to produce virgin plastic. Smaller bespoke projects for progressive independent firms often demand the highest level of attention to detail, as evident in Adapt Commercial Property's new studio space at the environmentally conscious McLellan Works building in Glasgow City Centre. We collaborated closely with Fergus Maclennan, Founder & Director at Adapt, and his creative design teams at c2:concepts and Ninetwo™ to bring this project to life. Opened just a year after Fergus founded Adapt, the new office highlights the importance of a bright, collaborative workplace with flexibility at its core. The design concept includes various settings to foster collaboration and creativity while also recognising the need for quiet zones for individual focused work. A standout feature is the Framery Six Pod, the first of its kind in Scotland, which provides a dedicated client meeting area and a soundproof environment for confidential conversations and video calls. This project exemplifies how service excellence thrives in the details, regardless of the scale. Aidan Robertson Shaun Bartram Roddy Scott

For more than 15 years, we have embedded "Design for Reuse" into our company DNA. In 2008, led by Division Director Peter Stanway, we collaborated with a leading credit ratings company on a project with the circular economy at the heart of it. This initiative included: • Refurbishing 600 task chairs to 'as new' condition. • Reconfiguring and reusing 600 workstations, utilising all component parts. • Cleaning and reusing all conference seating. Today, our Design for Reuse approach is being utilised in over 60% of our 2024 projects, helping our clients achieve their sustainability goals in a manner that is both authentic and impactful. We recognise that reducing the global statistic of over 80% of furniture ending up in landfill each year is a significant challenge that cannot be resolved overnight. At Tsunami Axis, we are fully committed to doing our part to make a real difference. If you wish to learn more about what we are doing to support our clients ESG goals please get in touch.

177 Bothwell Street exemplifies Virgin Money's dedication to evolving workstyles and sustainable practices in 2024. By partnering closely with Form Design Form Design Consultants Ltd, we have crafted a dynamic space that promotes in-office collaboration and fosters a strong sense of community. The foundation of our sustainability strategy lies in longevity, starting with the evaluation of existing furniture for reuse. Our audit identified 50 pieces from ØRN Furniture and Ocee & Four Design, resulting in significant carbon savings and extending the life of these items. For new furniture, we prioritised materials and supplier proximity, opting for locally sourced fabrics, desks, and task chairs, which considerably reduced the project’s overall CO2 transportation emissions. Working alongside Form Design, we developed bespoke solutions to support Virgin Money's vision of a highly collaborative workspace. This included custom boardroom tables designed to enhance user experience. Additionally, multiple spaces throughout the building are designed for hybrid use, such as the town hall, which serves as a primary gathering point and doubles as a training and yoga space. These areas are furnished with loose mobile tables and chairs, ensuring adaptability for various functions. "What is rising is a much greater empathy," remarked Mary Portas OBE on sustainability and ethical production during her talk on Day 1 of this year's CDW. This sentiment was clearly evident in both the conversations over the three days and the notable rise of sustainably focused furniture seen across the showrooms. Here is a snippet of the highlights we saw: 🌳 With 80% of a product’s environmental impact determined during the design phase, it's crucial to consider its lifecycle, from manufacturing and delivery to post-warranty. As a result, successful designers and producers are focusing on and experimenting with every facet of manufacturing, from sustainable pigments to the reuse of waste materials and processing with renewable energy. 🖥️ Technological advancements, like CGI, are transforming the design process. By using virtual sampling and mood boards, designers can engage clients effectively while reducing waste and the environmental costs associated with physical samples and shipping. 🪑 Showrooms showcased cutting-edge materials, such as the Andreu World Bolete sofa, featuring a BIO thermopolymer base produced by living microorganisms that is recyclable, biodegradable, and has a sustainability profile akin to wood. Davison Highley Ltd's zero waste approach, with its modular seating Elements made from offcut materials, and Brunner UK's Crona Light Eco chair, constructed entirely from recycled components, highlighted the ever-growing ways to approach sustainable production. Overall, it was a hugely successful and insightful CDW. A big congratulations and thank you to everyone involved. This year's Mental Health Awareness theme was Movement and the importance of moving more, so the Tsunami Axis team has been taking to the streets, racking up steps throughout the week. We’ve also enjoyed gathering for breakfast with wellness colouring sheets and a talk by Amelia Wrighton, Co-Founder and CEO of the bereavement charity Suicide&Co, with a nutritious lunch catered by Pure. Amelia's talk aimed to empower our team with the language and confidence needed to support anyone experiencing bereavement. It also gave us the tools to help recognise when a colleague might be struggling with their mental health and how we can offer effective support. Last year, we donated office furniture to Suicide&Co and onboarded their corporate tools to ensure we can provide the necessary support for our team. We recognise that the work for mental health extends far beyond this week, and we are committed to continually empowering ourselves and creating a safe environment for everyone in Tsunami. If you're struggling with your mental health and need someone to talk to, call the Samaritans at 116 123 (available 24/7). If you've been bereaved by suicide and need support, call Suicide&Co at 0800 054 8400 (Mon-Fri, 9am to 5pm). #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek
