Blackcladding refers to the practice of non-Indigenous companies pretending to be Indigenous to secure contracts and benefits, thereby causing genuine Indigenous businesses to lose out on valuable opportunities. Often the entity may have an Indigenous owner who has no involvement in the day-to-day operations of the businesses and is merely a cover for a non-Indigenous company to benefit from Indigenous procurement targets. For organisations wishing to engage with Indigenous businesses, it is paramount to ask probing questions to ensure collaboration with legitimately Indigenous majority-owned, managed, and controlled organisations. It is about working with entities where genuine Indigenous management has actual control over an organisation's operations and decisions. 📍 Here’s How to Ensure Genuine Engagement: 1. Due Diligence: Regularly conduct stringent and thorough background checks on prospective Indigenous business partners. 2. Ask Critical Questions: Inquire about ownership, management structure, control, and the involvement of Indigenous people in the day-to-day operations of the businesses. 3.
