InfraCredit is promoting responsible investment in the infrastructure space not just through its active ownership practices but also through stakeholder capacity building at the portfolio and market levels. As part of the training delivery, I conducted a high-level poll to understand ESG sentiments and adoption levels within the pension and insurance sectors in Nigeria. Some key insights emerged: 1. 65% of Participants indicated that their organizations have developed a Responsible Investment/ESG Policy, implying that an increasing number of PFAs and insurance companies have adopted ESG practices in their corporate practices and investment/insurance operations. 2. 77% indicated that Green Bonds and other Sustainable Finance Instruments raised on the Capital Market can play a crucial role in advancing the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Nigeria. Interestingly, 6% disagree that GBs and SFIs can make much difference in SDGs achievement in Nigeria. Clearly, most industry players align on the role of sustainable finance instruments in accelerating SDG achievement; however, there are still divergent perspectives that suggest more work needs to be done to enhance stakeholder engagement and alignment. 3. 73% indicated that ESG criteria are incorporated in their investment analysis and decision-making, while 27% have yet to embed ESG considerations in their investment operations. The Pension and Insurance Sectors are increasingly embracing ESG adoption in their investment and insurance operations, even though there are still laggards. Market-leading initiatives by InfraCredit and its engagement with key stakeholders (PenCom, NAICOM, PenOP, etc.) have enabled improved ESG practices in the industries.
