President & CEO at Nel ASA

Together with several other CEOs of European hydrogen companies, I had the pleasure of meeting with EVP of the European Commission, Maroš Šefčovič, in Brussels this week.   A key topic of discussion was how Europe can avoid replacing one unfortunate dependency (imported energy) with another (clean tech). Unfortunately, Europe seems to have lost out on solar and battery technology; wind and hydrogen technology might be next.   To prevent this from happening, the EU needs to get its industrial policies right and create a level playing field where the continent’s hydrogen OEMs have a fair chance of winning. That does not mean that the EU should block foreign OEMs from exporting their products to Europe but everyone needs to play by the same rules and be held to the same standards.   Today, European companies find themselves at a significant disadvantage in Europe. For example, - Chinese OEMs receive massive direct and indirect financial support that dwarfs what Europe has done so far and what it’s planning to do. This allows them to sell cheap products to Europe - Chinese OEMs have limited domestic compliance & reporting requirements whereas European OEMs are subject to onerous EU rules and regulations. The reporting burden and compliance cost for European OEMs keeps growing every year. Meanwhile, there is limited scrutiny of Chinese exporters. - Chinese OEMs are preferred when state-owned Chinese companies award contracts while European companies cannot even bid on these unless they set up shop in China or enter into JVs with Chinese companies.   In short there is one set of rules for European OEMs and another set of rules for Chinese OEMs. Therefore, we argued that the next European Hydrogen Bank auction should have 3 non-price criteria to ensure fair competition, quality jobs, and value creation in Europe: 1. The electrolyzer cells/electrodes must be made in Europe 2. The electrode surface treatment must happen in Europe 3. The stacking of electrodes must happen in Europe   We need the EU to be a referee and put an end to the disadvantages European OEMs experience on their home turf. Let there at least be fair competition to decide who the better players are.… Renewable Hydrogen Coalition Olivia Breese Dr. Sopna Sury Ana Quelhas Peter Friis Kim Hedegaard François Paquet Philipp Offenberg Pierre TARDIEU Josche Muth Constantine Levoyannis

Made in europe! 20 major electrolyser manufacturers, including Nel Hydrogen, Siemens Energy and thyssenkrupp nucera, are working together to support Europe's hydrogen industry and curtail the influx of cheap Chinese imports. They have signed a letter calling on the European Commission President nominee Ursula von der Leyen to ensure a level playing field and require more "made in Europe" standards for the industry. "I don't want to give up on Europe. If we don't create demand for European technology in Europe, we squander the opportunity for European OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] to win." Says Nel Hydrogen CEO and President Håkon Volldal. Renewable Hydrogen Coalition CEOs urge EU leaders to act now! 👊 Tomorrow, Member States will appoint the next President of the European Commission. With the European Green Deal, the current Commission has supported renewable hydrogen, but challenges remain. The cost of renewable hydrogen is still high, and the European electrolyser industry faces global competition. The next European Parliament and Commission President must: 🟣 Set strong EU funding to massively scale up renewable hydrogen production and bring its cost down. 🟣 Adopt a robust European industrial strategy to build a competitive and resilient value chain in Europe as a matter of strategic Policymakers, it's time to act! Food made from thin air 🫧 We had the pleasure of visiting one of our innovative customers, Solar Foods. This startup utilizes renewable hydrogen from Nel’s electrolysers to produce Solein, a versatile protein that can be used in everything from pasta to baby food. People often associate renewable hydrogen with fuel and heavy industry. The truth is, renewable hydrogen has a myriad of applications💡 Solar Foods refers to Solein as "today’s potato". Just as the potato was once a groundbreaking innovation, they believe Solein can revolutionise the way we produce food. It’s a sustainable protein source that can be created anywhere, anytime – without the need for traditional agriculture. All of this is made possible through the use of renewable hydrogen 👌🏻

Offshore wind meets renewable hydrogen production 🌬 Discover the PosHYdon project, where our electrolyser technology will harness offshore wind to produce renewable hydrogen on an oil and gas platform in the North Sea. As Todd Cartwright, our CCO, says, "Offshore hydrogen production has an enormous amount of potential. If you look at the projections, it's supposed to grow substantially over the next 10, 20 years." This initiative is a milestone in the North Sea's energy transition 👏 PosHYdon; world’s first offshore green hydrogen production
