Offshore wind as the source to hydrogen production enhances the value it has by its unique contribution in providing stronger, more consistent wind speeds, reducing land use conflicts, and minimizing visual and noise impacts. It allows for closer proximity to major population centers, reducing the need for long-distance transmission lines. Offshore wind hydrogen production by integrating electrolyser at the wind turbine will be cheaper than hydrogen production via an offshore wind farm for electricity production that is connected with an electricity cable to a large scale electrolyser plant. The main reasons are: 1) Less electricity conversion and losses because low voltage DC from the wind turbine can directly be used by the electrolyser 2) lower transport cost for hydrogen than for electricity, 3) no platform or land cost for large scale electrolyser plant, 4) Offshore wind hydrogen turbine as standardized product 5) Only one integrated offshore wind hydrogen farm development necessary. Super point made by Prof Wijk (see below), as part of the Energy Transition path way! Potential OSW developers considering an Indian venture should be open to factor this (starting with the very first just launched 4 GW RFP for seabed leasing off the coast of Tamil Nadu), in conjunction with the already ongoing massive Indian National Green Hydrogen scheme. In fact, Indian policy makers have the option to support such efforts under its SIGHT programme. The US$ 2.1bn Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) programme, has US$ 176Mn for pilot projects, US$ 48 Mn for R&D and US$ 46 Mn is already earmarked. It may be more relevant for a country like India, where there is already severe ground & surface water scarcity, and GH2 projects could be forced for the seawater desalination route from environmental & social compulsions. Techno-economics of OSW clubbed GH2 production is worth exploring & providing a means for this Indian sector to be future ready, which anyway is majorly targeting export of GH2.

What will we do with the old oil rigs?  The PosHYdon consortium could have answer - and it's happening today💡   The PosHYdon consortium is making history with the world's first offshore renewable hydrogen project on an operational gas platform. This pilot aims to validate the integration of three energy systems: offshore wind, offshore gas, and offshore hydrogen. By harnessing the power of wind, PosHYdon will convert seawater into demineralized water and then produce renewable hydrogen through electrolysis.   What sets PosHYdon apart is its innovative approach to leveraging existing infrastructure. The renewable hydrogen produced will be blended with natural gas and transported to shore via an existing pipeline, minimizing environmental impact and costs. As the first project of its kind, PosHYdon is paving the way for large-scale renewable hydrogen production at sea. Germany's ambitious 9,700 km, €20 billion hydrogen network plan 🇩🇪 Germany has announced a landmark plan to build a 9,700 km hydrogen pipeline network by 2032. The €20 billion project will have a capacity of 270 TWh, far exceeding the estimated demand of 90-130 TWh. This initiative involves the conversion of 60% of existing pipelines, demonstrates Germany's commitment to renewable energy and sets a new standard for hydrogen infrastructure. ENGIE and POSCO to study Pilbara green hydrogen project. By Dominic Ellis ENGIE and POSCO Holdings have signed an agreement to conduct a pre-feasibility study for a flagship green hydrogen project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The project will supply green hydrogen to the group’s proposed Hot Briquetted Iron (HBI) plant for the production of green iron in Port Hedland, with the potential to supply green fuel to South Korea, to decarbonise POSCO’s existing assets. The study will support and refine the development plans for inland renewable energy sites in the Pilbara, including wind and solar generation, a hydrogen electrolyser, large-scale storage capability and pipeline capable of delivering green hydrogen to POSCO Group’s HBI plant, once operational. https://lnkd.in/dusQCadD

The European Commission will hold a pilot auction to subsidise renewable hydrogen production on 23 November with the aim of scaling up clean energy deployment and reducing dependence on Russian fossil fuels, it said on 30 August... #hydrogen #renewables #auction #europeanunion

Infinite Green Energy (IGE) and Axpo Holding AG are set to collaborate on a 30MW green hydrogen project in Abruzzo, Italy. Under a Joint Development Agreement (JDA), the two companies will deploy the commercial-scale Valle Peligna Hydrogen Project, anticipated to produce 12 tonnes per day of renewable hydrogen. Utilising a 30MW electrolyser, powered by a 45MW solar plant, the hydrogen produced will be provided to hard-to-abate sectors by 2025. The electrolyser is capable of producing 4,200 tonnes of hydrogen per year. Expected to save 67,000 tonnes per annum of CO2, the project could also include a refuelling station before potentially expanding to the Trans-European Transport Network (T-ETN). https://lnkd.in/eh-_JbD2
