🔋As the world transitions towards a more sustainable energy landscape, countries like Chile will be playing a leading role in supplying the lithium-ion batteries essential for powering electric vehicles and utility scale storage systems. Chile set an important agreement on the exploration model, between lithium miner SQM and state-run Codelco, where SQM will contribute with its extensive mining expertise, infrastructure, and workforce, while Codelco will provide a long-term lease and authorization for increased lithium extraction. Such agreements, supported by regulation, may be a way to secure access to lithium brines for an extended period, providing a stable framework for long-term operations, enhancing lithium production capabilities. #MitsubishiMaterials and Anglo American have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to work together to provide #sustainable products across the #copper #supplychain.   To achieve #carbonneutrality, the switch to #electricvehicles and the increased use of electricity from #renewable sources will be promoted. Global demand for copper is therefore expected to increase. 🔋As the #battery industry continues to require more and more #nickel, a key trend has emerged: MHP and matte from laterites have become the key inputs for battery-grade nickel sulphate production, overtaking Class I nickel metal. 📈MHP and laterite matte accounted for less than a quarter of total nickel sulphate production in 2021, but #Benchmark forecasts this will rise to nearly 60% of the market in 2023. Most of this growth has come from laterite matte. 🇮🇩#Indonesia is the key producer of this MHP and laterite matte, with a flurry of investment in recent months, including #POSCO’s plan to build a 52ktpa matte plant in Weda Bay and #Ford’s $4.5bn investment in an HPAL project in Sulawesi. 🏭Ford is not the only western player to invest in Indonesian nickel, with a consortium including Glencore and Umicore reportedly planning to invest $9bn in #lithium-ion battery supply chain investments in the country. 📩Get in touch for more info on Benchmark’s Nickel Forecast service. Suvo Strategic Minerals (ASX: SUV) Ltd has kept its 'buy' recommendation with a price target of $0.10 due to its Pittong Hydrous #Kaolin Plant in Victoria ramping production back to historical levels, according to PAC Partners. The research firm sees the under-the-radar Suvo on the fast-track path to positive earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) and free cash flow (FCF) this year, with limited downside from external debt. “We recently visited Suvo’s Pittong operations with about 25 investors,” Pac Partners said in a research note. “We came away impressed with the solid foundations that support a straightforward investment case.” Suvo shares are currently trading at about $0.028. Brazil: How the government encourages the lithium production chain in the country In Brazil, the government’s policy of encouraging the renewal of the vehicle fleet with a focus on electromobility could attract the other links in the production chain, from lithium mining to the local manufacture of battery cells. The potential expansion, named the P2000 Project, would further extend Pilbara Minerals’ position as the largest pure play lithium producer globally. BHP might just be getting serious about fully exploiting its ability to refine and export copper on a large scale from its South Australian copper mines – however the company has considered major expansions previously and baulked at the cost. Australia’s performance in refining and exporting metals has been lacklustre in recent years reflecting the ageing of existing facilities and a lack of confidence in the market for copper. We know confidence has returned and BHP finds itself in the box seat to produce not only more copper, but more low emission copper in a province rich in copper and renewable energy resources. It's time for Australia to do more than just digging and exporting raw materials, but will this one actually come off. Only time will tell but here's hoping 🤞 https://lnkd.in/gUYzxw6t
