Different customers in different industries are what make the projects in our Smart Grid Solutions business so interesting… so says 𝗛𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹 𝘃𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝗲𝗿, a member of the Alfen team who recently supported a dynamic project for the VOF Dogterom agricultural business. Learn more about Hessel’s experience at Alfen, what drives him to succeed, and what makes him tick. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙚 𝙙𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙮 𝙖𝙩 𝘼𝙡𝙛𝙚𝙣? 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙚𝙣𝙟𝙤𝙮 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙞𝙩? My primary responsibilities are to support our SGS project managers in all key aspects of preparing to execute our projects at customer sites. This involves ensuring that the right materials, parts, instructions, safety documents, and other necessary resources are on-site when project work begins. My favourite part of Alfen is that it’s still a growing company, so there’s ample opportunity to learn and grow. I started as a mechanic on one of our production lines, and within about a year, I was able to advance to lead the production line activities. Then, after just 2 years with the company, I began working in my current project work preparator role. In all my positions, I’ve had great and fun experiences with colleagues, including various employee outings and activities that Alfen hosts to build camaraderie. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙨 𝙙𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙚𝙣𝙟𝙤𝙮 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙣 𝙩𝙝���� 𝙢𝙤𝙨𝙩? 𝙁𝙤𝙧 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙘𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙤𝙢𝙚𝙧𝙨? Actually, the Dogterom project is a perfect example of the type of efforts and customers I enjoy working with at Alfen. The Dogterom family's commitment to sustainability makes their projects engaging. Customers like Dogterom often prefer more focused project scopes, allowing for direct collaboration without the complexities of involving many subcontractors. Additionally, their dedication to sustainable practices brings fresh perspectives and innovative solutions to the table. Throughout the Dogterom project, their expertise and proactive approach helped us discover new ways to integrate our technologies with their sustainability goals, making the collaboration highly rewarding. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙤 𝙞𝙣 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙥𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙤𝙣𝙖𝙡 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚? 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙨? I’m a basic guy, so I like spending time with my family. We’re always looking for reasons to spend time together, like taking weekends away or enjoying family activities. Recently, we had a great time watching the UEFA championships together. On most Saturdays, I volunteer for scouting and make or lead the programs of activities for the kids in attendance. I also have different interests, such as playing video games, watching films or television series, manga/anime, and puzzles like the Rubik’s cube! Great news!🔌🚗 Alfen is the 1st European AC charging station manufacturer to secure OCPP 2.0.1. certification for 2 crucial modules: Core and Advanced Security. OCPP, which stands for Open Charge Point Protocol, is essentially the language our chargers use to communicate with our clients’ management servers. Simply put, it means that our Twin 5 and Twin 5 Plus public chargers comply with the latest standards. Incorporating OCPP 2.0.1 into our in-house developed Alfen Hardware Platform, enhances security and functionality for EV drivers and charge point operators. And there’s more good news: this communication standard opens the door to 2 future developments under ISO15118, the international communication standard for EV charging: Plug & Charge and Bidirectional charging functionalities, also known as Vehicle-2-Grid (V2G). Good news: our Italian team signed an agreement with CNA, an Italian association that represents the interests of small and medium-sized enterprises and artisans. Alfen and CNA will develop a professional training program for customers and installers to provide comprehensive education on EV charging stations, including installation and maintenance procedures. Together, we will develop and teach these skills to the entrepreneurs associated with CNA Rome and the students of a prominent Italian institution dedicated to education and training, called the CNOS-FAP Institute. As part of the partnership, #Alfen will provide the training institution in the Lazio region with some practical material for use during the training activities. Another project update from Ostend, Belgium, where we’ve made big steps installing a 24MW 2-hour battery system for energy multinational Centrica Business Solutions. The site will play a crucial role in increasing overall energy flexibility in the country, where the battery storage market is growing quickly as Belgium prioritises green energy to secure its long-term energy supply. When completed, the battery, situated on land at Ostend Basic Chemicals, will have the capacity to store energy and power 48,000 homes for 2 hours, enabling the grid to balance the peaks and troughs of renewable energy generation. After installing the components, we will create all electrical connections. Soon after, the plant will be energised and further commissioning and operational testing will take place. Kier Construction, a leading provider of infrastructure services, construction and property developments, is using mobile batteries developed by Alfen to reduce carbon emissions. At a 54-acre construction site in Yorkshire, Northern England, the combination of clean mobile storage and diesel generators is saving its customer over 14,000 litres of fuel and 47 tonnes of carbon every month! A wonderful example of how our compact, plug-and-play battery units are helping our customers achieve cleaner construction!
