How do we power a 54-acre construction site while keeping our net zero goals on target?🎯 At HMP Millsike in Yorkshire, we’re building the UK’s first all-electric prison and we’ve used hybrid energy solutions to reduce our carbon emissions during the build. Working together, our generators and battery storage units are a carbon-reduction dream team saving over 14,000 litres of fuel and 47 tonnes of carbon every single month! Each Sunbelt Rentals UK & Ireland battery storage unit on site is paired with a generator and they work in ‘shifts.’ During the busy work day: ☀️👷🏗️ Our generators work hard to power all of the tools needed to complete the day’s construction while the battery units store up energy. At night and on the weekend:🌙💤 Workload drops, so our generators take a well-earned break and our battery storage units kick in to deliver energy that’s free from fuel, emissions and noise. This hybrid ‘job share’ means that our generators can be powered off for around 12.5 hours per day for big carbon savings. Ben Stone, group head of environmental sustainability at Kier says: “It’s actions like these that will help us move another step forward on our journey to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. GREENER HIGHWAYS 🛣️💚: Three local roads in northeast England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 have become the lowest carbon highways ever to be resurfaced in the UK, thanks to a project that has set a new benchmark for how roads are maintained. Working in partnership with Hartlepool Borough Council and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council together with international partners including Shell, Volvo Construction Equipment, WIRTGEN GROUP and JCB, Tarmac, a CRH company, has reduced the carbon emissions of the road schemes by up to 80% compared to projects using traditional methods. It is understood these projects have the lowest CO₂ emissions for road resurfacing in the UK without using carbon offsetting. The project team combined an extensive range of low-carbon materials, techniques and plant equipment for the very first time to resurface a section of the A689 in Wynyard, near Hartlepool, and two residential roads in Stockton-on-Tees Borough. Working in partnership with Hartlepool Borough Council and Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council together with international partners including Shell, Volvo CE Grand Paris, WIRTGEN GROUP and JCB, Tarmac, a CRH company, has reduced the carbon emissions of the road schemes by up to 80% compared to projects using traditional methods. It is understood these projects have the lowest CO₂ emissions for road resurfacing in the UK without using carbon offsetting. The project team combined an extensive range of low carbon materials, techniques and plant equipment for the very first time to resurface a section of the A689 in Wynyard, near Hartlepool, and two residential roads in Stockton-on-Tees Borough. Warm mix asphalt was used together with a new bio-component binder from Shell which uses bio-genic materials to create a “technical carbon sink” in the road to prevent carbon being released into the atmosphere. The surface course and lower layer of the pavements used 30% recycled asphalt planings (RAP) in the lower layer and 20% in the surface course to reduce the need for primary materials. Tarmac’s asphalt manufacturing plant at Coxhoe was powered by a combination of bio-fuel and electricity.... A free guide giving Devon homeowners, tradespeople and architects detailed advice about adding energy efficiency measures (commonly referred to as ‘retrofitting’) to house types found in Devon, has been launched by Energy Saving Devon. Devon County Council has led the production of the guide as part of its work to improve the quality and speed of retrofitting homes needed to eliminate carbon emissions by 2050, lower energy bills and create comfortable, healthy homes. The free Devon Retrofit Guide covers a range of retrofit components including insulation, renewable energy systems and ventilation. It gives technical details to equip installers and architects with the knowledge and tools to advise clients about how to reduce their energy costs and carbon emissions. It’s equally useful for competent DIYers. Construction sites across the UK are making the switch to cleaner, greener energy sources. This is a positive step towards reducing carbon emissions, and a greener future for us all. It has been estimated that diesel use on construction sites account for around 10% of the UK's total emissions, making it a significant contributor to air pollution. Optimising resources is a key component when it comes to ecological transformation. With us using more resources than ever before, it is vital to start adopting more closed loop solutions. Our energy recovery facilities (ERFs) play an important role in the circular economy, where energy is recovered from waste to supply electricity to the National Grid ⚡. At our South East London Combined Heat and Power (SELCHP) facility, waste is recovered from boroughs across London to produce energy. Adjacent to SELCHP is our first all electric depot, Landmann Way, home to our electric waste collection fleet. A private wire between SELCHP and Landmann Way has been introduced so that some of the energy generated from the waste these vehicles collect, will charge them ready for their collection rounds the next day and beyond 🔌🚛. Much credit is due to New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) and New York Power Authority for taking bold action on this $28M electrification project. The important thing is to apply the lessons learned from projects like this as we work towards developing truly affordable and scalable solutions. The $175K/apt price tag shows the true cost of tenant disruption for a system that would cost a small fraction of that in a new building, and that electrification of NYCHA’s buildings simply isn’t viable without including envelope upgrades to reduce heating and cooling loads.
